Is basic income the wave of the future?

in #basicincome6 years ago

There is no doubt that basic income is receiving more publicity than any other time in history. We saw this going from a rarely discussed topic a few years ago to being a regular topic in many mainstream publications.

Certainly there is still a long way to go with this idea. We feel that the major force behind the discussion is the threat of automation. Universal basic income is starting to receive some publicity; the threat of automation destroying jobs is further along in the new cycle.

Our approach of utilizing cryptocurrency was once a novel idea. There are now a few other projects in the works that are trying to follow what we are doing. They are still pre-ICO so a lot can happen before they reach the point of being anything more than an idea.

Since joining Steemit, we are starting to see a few projects that are basic income in nature. The most obvious is the works of @steembasicincome. Here the basic income is using Steem and upvotes. It is a novel approach, one that we are supporting.

Another idea that recently came to our attention is the @tribesteemup project. This one is not fully a basic income in the traditional definition yet it does have some interesting attributes. We see the use of upvotes via an automated curation trail as a form of income. Individuals are able to time their upvotes to be ahead of the large vote that is following from the @tribesteemup account. They also upvote selected posters based upon an internal criteria.

How this all compares to a traditional basic income is difficult. It is encouraging to see people trying different methods to this problem. We are comforted knowing that many people see the issues with income inequality and generational poverty. It is going to take a mixture of ideas to solve this problem.

It would be nice to get everyone's thoughts on this? Is basic income going to be something we see in the future? How might it look? Will this ever move from an economic discussion to one that is about human rights? At what point might we see the pendulum swing, if ever?

I hope so. I think it's far more likely to happen in Scandinavian countries first, just because they are lightyears ahead in other human rights and basic needs areas. In the US? Not until the people, as the saying goes, see themselves as an oppressed proletariat instead of temporarily embarrassed millionaires. And when, you know, we actually have a democracy instead of a plutocracy.

By the way Easydex was thinking about listing Manna on their decentralized exchange-do you want to talk to them and make them more likely to list Manna? Here their discord: https://discord.gg/E3YMQhW

Thank you for the information.

We will forward the link to Brandon to get with them.

No problem-UBI is amazing :)
Keep up the good work!

It's hard to know the future at times so by saying what basic income would be in future would be just like prediction

I see it as inevitable, but there's a few paths by which we might arrive, and not all of them are desirable. In particular, I worry about the route which involves an increasing wealth gap, followed by civil unrest, oppression by the 1%, and an eventual bloody revolution. To be fair, that's one of the darkest routes, but it is a possibility.

That's why I get excited by people talking about UBI and even more excited by concrete, real-world projects such this, @steembasicincome, and the various government-lead initiatives. By talking about it and creating working models, not only do we reduce suffering sooner, but we also reduce the probability of that dark future.
