My rationally for why Brave Browser should consider adding a lite Antivirus

in #bat5 years ago

I recently read an article about how Chrome web browser integrated a lite Antivirus with basic functions. You can read more about how to scan a computer using Chrome here:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/leemathews/2018/05/24/how-to-scan-your-computer-for-malware-with-google-chrome/

This gave me another idea. If Chrome can do it, Brave should be able to do it too! What Brave will have to do is, partner with a company like Avast, ESET etc and provide Antivirus solutions that will help protect Brave Browser's client side data. That is, the data a user stores inside the browser such as browsing history, Bookmarks etc.

These are very sensitive data that if exposed to malicious hand, will be used to violate user privacy. This goes against the core principle of Brave which is to provide users with better privacy controls over their data. Letting them choose whether they want their data to be used or not.

This is the reason why I made a little noise about this issue on r/BATProject the biggest community of Brave users. You can read more about this on the following link:

https://old.reddit.com/r/BATProject/comments/bc6myb/brave_should_port_a_lite_anti_virus_into_it/eko73ft/?context=3

The above thread I reposted on r/brave_browser as well for more discussion on this issue.

https://old.reddit.com/r/brave_browser/comments/bc6ubo/brave_should_port_a_lite_antivirus_into_it/?

Contents of the thread:

Brave should consider putting a lite antivirus that will protect it if it is installed in a computer that doesn't have virus protection. What do you guys think? Would like to hear from team as well about this.

Sort:

These are very sensitive data that if exposed to malicious hand, will be used to violate user privacy.

So you want those antivirus companies to snoop through your bookmarks and history so they can "look" for a virus in them?

Viruses are such a fad, when is the last time you were actually infected? You have to be very computer illiterate to get one nowadays and those people will obviously not be on brave, they will probably be on microsoft edge or something clicking on the "you have won" banners.

Why are you spouting nonsense? Brave's data is offline and stays in the client computer. And when the virus scanner verifies the files, it is generally done offline. I never said anything about online virus scanning.

But Brave, better said the team behind it, cant guarantee, that nothing will be sent to the servers of the antivirus, because ESET, Avast and so on are not open source.
There could be also backdoors.
And this would be against the whole idea of Brave.

Its a nice idea, but at first why should you scan the browsing history, bookmarks and so on?
The chance, that there would be a virus is very low, because how should it be executed?
And the secend thing is i personally think its a waste of resources, because the most people have already an antivirus running and a second would just slow down the pc.
And as stated in the other comment: it has to be an open source antivirus otherwise its totally against the idea of Brave.

P.s. if you want more security, then just use Linux. :)
Its a lot more secure and private and there are many nice distributions out there, with different features, different look.
So there should be something for everybody. :)
I recently installed for example Elementary OS.
Its worth a look.
And if you need windows programms, you can usw wine. :)
