Clean Up Your Makeup Routine
A few years ago, I started making the switch to cleaner and safer personal care and makeup products. So many conventional products contain endocrine disruptors that can affect thyroid function, fertility, and other negative health problems including cancers. After several clean-outs of discarding several bags of unsafe and unused products, I finally have a routine that my skin does well with and that meets safer beauty standards. Here's what I did to get there:
1. Gather up all your current products - makeup, face wash, body wash, lotions, everything!
2. Scan them into the “Think Dirty” app and EWG SkinDeep database to see if there are questionable ingredients (note: a few big “red flags” are if the ingredient list has parabens or propylene glycol, among many others)
3. Toss and old or expired items
4. Prioritize what you may need to replace first – start with the things you use the most that came back with the unsafe ratings
5. Look for safer brands. A few ideas include:
- Organic Wear by Physicians Formula (can be found at Ulta)
- Brands found in health food stores
6. Know what colors look best with your skin tone and buy accordingly. Do a little research on this if you don't know. What color are your eyes and what eyeshadow colors go best with them? Are you cool or warm skin-toned?
I have attempted several homemade recipes for makeup but unfortunately haven't found the right combinations yet to use them regularly. You can try some yourself though by searching for homemade powder, mascara, and other makeup recipes. For now, here is the combination I'm using:My makeup & personal care routine:
*Homemade facewash & toner (usually Bronner's castile soap and witch hazel)
*A little almond or other oil for moisturizing
100% Pure foundation or Organic Wear foundation
*Blush from the health food store or Vitacost
100% Pure or *Pacifica eyeshadows
100% Pure & Organic Wear mascaras
*A little Bronner's or Jason lotion as needed for dry skin
*Bronner's castile soap for face wash, body wash, & shampoo
Homemade or *EO brand deodorant
Homemade dry shampoo - get the recipe here.
*= I usually add these to my monthly Vitacost order when I need them. Learn more about how I shop with VitacostFor further reading on healthy skincare & some homemade recipes, I love the book Holistic Beauty from the Inside Out.
