This is a wise bee story and is for children of all ages...

And now children we shall turn to page 43 of our schoolbooks and we shall read the story of the wise bee...

Let us begin:

In a tree full of flowers a bee was collecting pollen and as it went from flower to flower it noticed a caterpillar eating the green leaves. This was of no real interest to the bee as it only liked the flowers. At the end of the day the bee saw that the caterpillar had brought a sleeping bag and was snuggled up inside it.

“Not far to go for breakfast,” thought the bee about the caterpillar and off went the bee to where it slept over night.
The next day the bee came to the same tree and for a few days more the bee noticed that the caterpillar didn’t come out of its sleeping bag.

“Lazy,” thought the bee and thought no more of it.

And then one day when the sun was warm something began to emerge from the sleeping bag.

“And what do you suppose it was children? It was a butterfly and it smiled at the bee and the bee smiled back.

And so later as the bee was flying along looking for more flowers it came across another caterpillar that was on the road and so the bee went down and sang the caterpillar a song:

“...and on a tree by the sea where I came to be I saw a butterfly that smiled at me,” sang the bee to the caterpillar that was crawling along the road, lost and alone and looking for some hope.

“Really?” said the caterpillar.

“Yes, really,” said the bee.

“Tell me where this tree is so I too may go there,” said the caterpillar hopefully.

So the bee gave directions to the caterpillar and off went the caterpillar as fast as it could go and found the tree and crawled up into the tree and munched away at the leaves and munched away until it was quite content and then a funny thing happened: it turned into a cocoon and for a long while it did nothing much at all, or so it seemed from the outside, but inside, it was changing and then one day out from the cocoon burst a jolly butterfly and smiled at the bee that was hovering nearby.

“Hello,” said the butterfly and unfolded its wings to dry in the sun.

And from then on, if the bee saw a caterpillar it would go to it and sing it a song of where to find the tree.

And this is the end of the story. And now children it is time to sleep.
