Trying New Zealand's Beer! And my first entry into #BeerSaturday in freaking ages

in #beersaturday5 years ago (edited)

It's time to do some beer reviews again!

It's been freaking ages since I've done a beer review. But tonight, after arriving in Melbourne for a 3 day wedding that only allows alcohol consumption on the third day, I decided I really needed a beer or two while I have the chance to have some.

I'm staying in a hotel on the western side of Melbourne so I really don't know the area at all (I probably should have asked @melbourneswest for advice now that I think of it, sorry man). Conveniently, I stumbled across a little bar specialising in craft beer though. So I grabbed a couple of take aways to have in my hotel room.

I was in a rush, so grabbed a couple of beers from the same brewery that had incredibly creative labels. Interestingly, the brewery is one from New Zealand. Which is awesome, since I've never had a beer from this country before.

Garage Project

Garage Project is a brewery based out of Wellington in New Zealand. The brewery was started by three chaps who set up shop in an old Petrol Station. They've got a pretty wide range of beers that you can check out here.

What beers did I get stuck into tonight?

Tonight I grabbed two IPAs. Both are quite unique beers. But both were very hoppy.

Pernicious Weed - IPA - 8%

This was a beast of an IPA. You could actually taste the alcohol in this one. It had a fruity aroma, and was extremely bitter. The beer says that it has a fruity aroma and grapefruit on the palate. And this is spot on. The level of hoppiness and bitterness was a little surprising, but quite enjoyable at the same time.

Demus Favorem Amori (DFA) - IPA - 7.5%

Now this was a curious beer. This is an IPA that, according to the can, has flavours of Vietnamese mint (which seems oddly specific), mango, lime and chilli with a strong notes of citrus.

If I'm honest, I didn't detect the fruit flavours until late on the palate. There was a definite chilli spiciness which was interesting. And extremely bold hops flavours and bitterness.

This was a decent beer, but I preferred the Pernicious Weed. I do tend to favour the more traditional styles of IPA however so this isn't surprising to me.

Summary

Overall, I think I've found another brewery that's well worth exploring. The lads at Garage Brewing have quite a wide selection to choose from. So I'm keen to experience a few more of their offerings.

Have any of you other #BeerSaturday chaps and chapettes tried this brewery before? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Ah right on!

I think I would boycot a wedding that put that kinda restrictions on beer enjoyment but you seem to have found a great one! New Zealand ipa huh? I think I would be really into that!

Welcome back to #beersaturday! I may have to make a post for that today as well.

Have to agree with all of this, Pernicious Weed is a seriously good (if a little dangerous) beer, DFA I've never really liked, I'm not a spicy/chilli beer fan, but garage project do most of their styles really well.

Yeah 8% on that beer. And so freaking drinkable. Even the DFA was 7.5% which is strong enough. I’m glad that at least one other Beer Saturday person knows of this brewery.

How is your "belly beer" @mazzle? :)

I was always wondering how can you combine being fit and drinking beer so often.

Cheers
Piotr

This is my first beer post in a couple of months. I actually try to restrict my beer consumption to once a week or so. Every day certainly causes a large amount of weight gain.
