Organizer of the 51% attack on Ethereum Classic returned $ 100,000 to Gate.io

Bitcoin Exchange Gate.io reported that the likely organizer of the 51% attack on Ethereum Classic's network returned $ 100,000, which its users had previously lost.

Earlier this week, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange said users lost about 40,000 ETCs as a result of the attack. The stock exchange has promised to offset losses at its own expense.

However, on Saturday, Gate.io officials reported that an unknown hacker had returned at least half that amount. The company also noted that it had tried to contact the hacker, but so far no response has been received. The stock exchange also knows no reasons why it was returned to them.

"If the organizer of the attack did not seek utility, it could be a white hacker who wanted to remind people of the risks of the blockchain consensus and computing-related security," the exchange said.

Gate.io officials also stated that the ETC network's current hashrates are still not high enough, leaving the possibility of another 51% attack from renting computing capacity.

Currently, Gate.io requires 4,000 transactions to successfully complete transactions in ETC. The exchange expects that it will increase security and encourages other platforms to take similar measures to protect traders.

Previously, the investment company Grayscale Investments had assured its clients that they did not see any direct risk to the fund assets in Ethereum Classic after the network was attacked earlier this week.bitcoin2.png
