According to a recent study, more than half of Russians, 56% to be precise, do not know what cryptocurrency is. A large majority believe that Bitcoin and altcoins are digital assets at risk. Only 2% of the population owns virtual currencies. Tanya Chepkov reported this news through local media.

An online survey of the Russian population for crypto-currencies

Even though crypto-currencies and Blockchain are at the heart of media hype worldwide, only 44% of Russians have an idea of the concept and 31% have only a vague knowledge of the subject, according to a survey by Romir Research Holding.

Romir President Andrey Milekhin said :

"This survey clearly shows that cryptocurrencies have not yet become a significant financial instrument. Moreover, the cultural memory of Russian society still reflects the painful experience of losses caused by previous patterns, which translate into skepticism. "

A credible and justified reaction

Since January 2018, the number of financial scams in the cryptocurrency industry is on the rise . They are most often disguised as investment. This justifies in a way the fears among the population.

Romir has surveyed several citizens of all ages to make the results more credible and representative. It turns out that 56% of them do not know what a cryptocurrency is.

Just 13%, mostly 18 to 24 year olds, said they had no access to information on emerging technology. They do not understand the concept. There are twice as many men who have an affinity with crypto-currencies as there are women.

Among those who think they know Bitcoin and altcoins, 2% hold it. 11% showed an interest in investing in cryptocurrencies. Although there are a lot of digital tokens nowadays, Russians have a strong preference for Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH).

Three-quarters of those who own cryptocurrencies, or 76 percent, have done so with the goal of generating additional income. Half of them achieved their financial goals. Also, 24% of Russian owners have only acquired cryptocurrencies to be on the lookout for trends. 16% wanted to use them as a method of payment for goods and services.

It turns out that Russia is not the only country insensitive to emerging technologies. Finder conducted a survey on the American population . According to the results, only 8% of US residents hold cryptocurrencies.
