Wikipedia accepts donations in Bitcoin 😃

Neben der ganzen Löschdiskussions- und Exklusion vs. Inklusion-Debatte (wer und was ist relevant genug, um in Wikipedia aufgenommen zu werden) der letzten Tage, ist mir etwas Positives aufgefallen, wenn zwar auch etwas versteckt, aber auf der weiterführenden Spendenseite von Wikipedia gibt es als letzten Punkt die Möglichkeit in Bitcoin zu spenden.

Das finde ich schon mal einen guten Anfang und die Option wurde sogar schon 2014 hinzugefügt. Schade ist allerdings, dass sie die Kryptowährung nicht selbst aufbewahren, sondern ein zentrales Service (im Moment Bitpay) verwenden und dass man auch nicht anonym spenden kann. Aber das liegt sicherlich auch an den restriktiven regulatorischen Auflagen und weniger an Wikipedia selbst.

Trotzdem muss man sagen, dass Wikipedia/Wikimedia, die Entwicklung im Bereich Blockchain und Kryptowährung ein bisschen verschlafen hat und hier eigentlich als politische Open-Source- und Non-Profit-Organisation mehr in Richtung Dezentralität machen könnte, zumal es mittlerweile auch schon interessante Blockchain-basierte Projekte wie Everipedia.org gibt. Wird spannend, wie sich die größte Online-Enzyklopädie in Zukunft weiterentwickeln wird.

Besides the whole article for deletion discussion and exclusion vs. inclusion debate (who and what is relevant and notable enough to be included in Wikipedia) of the past days, I noticed something positive, though hidden, but on the "more ways to give" page of Wikipedia there is the option to donate in Bitcoin.

I think that's a good start and the option was even added in 2014. It's a pity however that they don't process and store the cryptocurrency themselves, but use a central service (currently Bitpay) and that you can't donate anonymously. But this is certainly also due to the restrictive regulatory requirements and less to Wikipedia itself.

Nevertheless, one has to say that Wikipedia/Wikimedia has missed the development in the area of blockchain and cryptocurrencies a bit and could actually do more in the direction of decentralization as a political open-source and non-profit organization, especially since there are already interesting blockchain-based projects such as Everipedia.org on the horizon. It's very exciting to see how the largest online encyclopedia will evolve in the future.
