Blockshipping - Transforming The Global Container Shipping Industry

in #blockchain6 years ago

Introduction:
The global seabourne container shipping industry accounts according a statistics from statista.com over 60 percent of all world seaborne trades, valued over 12 trillion USD in 2017 alone. Statistics also show that the container shipping industry is still growing yearly. From 1980 up to today, the international seaborne trade carried by container ship almost increased by over 17 times to over 1720 tons of goods loaded yearly in 2016.

Problems:
Unfortunately the global container shipping industry still today has quite unsolved costly problems. Daily thousands of containers are shipped around the globe. Known problems are for example the inefficiency of loaded containers. Often it is not known if containers are fully loaded or empty. And additionally to that tracking of containers hasn't been efficient at all. Due to security threats, inefficiency and overcapacity, not only avoidable costs in the shipping industry occur, but also not calculated costs for damaging the environment due to higher CO2 exhaust emerge.

A solution with the Blockshipping project:
A currently ongoing project called "Blockshipping" is facing those problems. Thanks to the blockchain technology, which comes with the advantage of having full transparency and secured transactions on the blockchain, Blockshipping can tackle those problems, which so far wasn't easy to solve.

The CEO and founder of Blockshipping Peter Ludvigsen said in an interview that the shipping industry so far has been quite conservative and therefore nobody wanted to take the first step to change things. But now with the blockchain technology enabling trust and transparency, even competitors might work together to find possible solutions for this global problem.
Blockshipping aims to create a Global Shared Container Platform (in short GSCP) to provide a container asset registry on the blockchain. By doing so, they aim to increase the efficiency of global handling of containers significantly and with that solve major problems in the container shipping industry. In three or four years, Blockshipping has set its goal to achieve a market coverage of over 60% with over 16 million container units registered on the platform. Additionally to that they also want to become the primary platform for all operational payments between stakeholder, haulage and sharing of containers. Furthermore the platform aims to be the number one IoT platform with real time tracking and visibility of all containers to all stakeholders.

The project finally states that:
“The GSCP platform will enable a savings potential for the global container industry of at least USD 5.7bn per year.”

ICO:
Blockshipping is currently doing their ICO to collect funds for project development, marketing and expansion.
For that up to 50,000,000, CCC (Container Crypto Coin) tokens are issued.

  • Planned hardcap: 24.8 million USD
  • Price per token during the ICO: 0,62$
  • Public sale from: 14th may - 14th june 2018

A special two-token-model:
What's special about Blockshipping is that it is running a two-token-model unlike many other projects with only one main token. Advantage by doing so is that tokens can serve different purposes and later on utility/growth therefore can be better reflected with having two different kind of tokens. Those are namely:

  • CPT (Container Platform Token) will be the internal utility token
  • CCC (Container Crypto Coin) will be the external revenue token
The purpose and technology on each token in comparison can be seen in this graphic below:

My Opinion:
As cryptocurrencies gain more popularity each day and more and more projects are adopting the blockchain technology, it is great to see that so many existing problems can be solved using the blockchain. Especially I'm very happy that also less known industries are slowly moving towards the blockchain. Bringing out a potential future platform for the global shipping industry and with that saving not only costs, but also the environment is a great step forward for every participant. As the container shipping industry also grows yearly, now is the time to finally act and find solutions. I'm therefore very confident, that Blockshipping can solve those problems with their goals. Overall I'm quite excited to see how this project will evolve. So stay tuned for further updates regarding the Blockshipping project.

Nice to see blockchain having more and more use cases. Good for the logistic industry overall, once the shipping industry problems have been solved.

Agreed on that, thanks for your comment.

@bumshak Great review on Blockshipping. I think that many people are not even aware about the container shipping industry and how big it is. Finally taking a step forward to solve those problems is essential for this industry. I think what Blockshipping is doing out there is really great and I really appreciate their efforts. I hope that this project will be successful.

@lenahunter thanks a lot for your feedback. Indeed I have to say that I also did know little about the container shipping industry beforehand. But it is a very important industry, which for sure is struggling with known problems that now needs to be solved. If you have any open questions about this project, feel free to ask.

Okay cool thanks. Will come back to you if I have any questions.

great review. would you say it's necessary to do it for global containers or could there be a more general blockchain technology for all kind of logistics and transportations? what about VEN and Walton?

@goya58 thanks for your feedback and suggestion. I personally would say that it is necessary for the global container industry since these problems exist globally. Once the platform is launched and the first containers are registered, others might follow up fast. As for your question regarding if this technology can be applied to other fields in the logistics or transportation I think that once the platform is ready it can be indeed applied into other usecases. Instead of tracking containers I might be thinking of tracking packages not only those delivered by vehicles on the ground, but also those on the air transport, because probably they face similar problems like the shipping industry. Regarding VEN and Walton, can you be a bit more specific what you are meaning here? Thanks for opening up a conversation btw, really appreciate it.

the plan of VEN is difficult to explain since their vision is very broad but as far as i know both VEN and Walton want to track products with the help of RFID Chips. So the big difference is they are going for products and here it's for tracking containers. I just thought it could be possible to have the RFID system of VEN and Walton also for containers. another approach also for products are NFC Chips. Seal Network is applying this for example. But I guess in future we will see more technologies and opportunities n this area and I agree that this project might start with ship containers and then migrate to air.

Hey, great input on that. Didn't know about the vision of VEN and Walton before, since I'm not invested, but only heard about their projects. Actually that sounds quite logic. As Blockshipping is more focused on containers rather than usual producs, I'm thinking that they will be the first-mover in this field, especially with their already acquired knowledge in the global container shipping industry. Therefore I don't see Walton or VEN beeing a competitor of Blockshipping. Rather I could imagine a partnership to expand their technologies into other business fields in the future.

Super interesting project. Blockshipping might be using their technology also on other fields I think. Once the shipping section has been done, probably the air-section like drones will be next? What do you think?

Thanks for your feedback. Yeah this truly could be. I also think that once the shipping industry has been tackled, other industries might come up next. Drones could be an option. Amazon and other companies are already testing drone delivieries. So good point on that :)

Cool project. Great to see a two token model. It's not quite common, but similar here to steemit and steem dollars. I think that blockshipping can help to solve problems in the shipping industry.

Yea, it's quite rare. But when it comes with advantages, why not. Each token has its own use, so overall a good move by the blockshipping project in my opinion.
