Most popular messenger apps in South Korea

Today 's topic is the most used messenger apps in South Korea when we get information related to blockchain and cryptocurrencies.

1. KakaoTalk

At the end of last July, the number of users of KakaoTalk was 42 million. Due to its high usage rate, KakaoTalk is considered as a 'National messenger.'

KakaoTalk has a feature called Open Chat Room, which is a chat room with a specific theme. We get information related to blockchain and cryptocurrencies through various open chat rooms. You can search for open chat rooms that share information about coins you have like EOS information sharing groups.

I guess one reason why most koreans use KakaoTalk when they obtain information on coins is that you don't have to install any other applications and you can just go into open chat rooms within KakaoTalk quickly.

Another reason I think is that you can chat in open chat rooms anonymously. When you create your own open chat room, you can choose to allow participants to chat anonymously or with a real name, but we usually allow them to chat anonymously.

Interestingly, common nicknames people use are 'gazua', 'black crane', 'black cow' and others. 'gazua' means 'Let's go' and it is used in the open chat rooms frequently when people hope coin prices to go up. People who buy a coin at a high price are called black cranes or black cow.

2. Telegram

The next most popular messenger in Korea is Telegram. It is usually used by people in their 20s and 30s. Like KakaoTalk, you can join group chats of coins you have or are interested in. You can also join group chats of coin foundations to ask questions directly. You can also join channels like ICO Pantera, a popular ICO channel in Korea.

3. Facebook

Many foreigners may think that Koreans are using Facebook to obtain information related to cryptocurrencies, but we mostly use KakaoTalk and Telegram as I said above. We read information that is shared in the open chat rooms in real time. Useful postings on Steemit and news from the press are usually shared.

4. Naver, which is not a messenger but it is often used

When we want to learn about a certain coin and obtain information on a hardfork, airdrop, etc, we do a search on Naver, which is referred to as 'the Google of Korea'. The sections of Naver Blog, Naver Cafe, and Naver Band are mainly used.

Naver Blog and Cafe are used regardless of age because they are exposed when using Naver search as you can see in the picture above. However, Naver Band is mostly used by people in their 40s to 50s to share information or make joint purchases. In order to use Naver Band conveniently, you had better download the application. In other words, there is an entry barriers.

So far, we have learned about the most popular messenger in Korea. I'll come back with other informative information next time. Thank you for reading.
