Non-Scalability

For those in the crypto space, the term "Non-Scalability" automatically conjures up visions of slow transaction speeds and a meager tps (transactions per second rate) - a la Bitcoin and Ethereum.

But this is a grossly oversimplified definition.

In reality, non-scalability can mean other things, such as the inability to accommodate X number of users on the network (usually due to the absence of any mechanisms that adapts the number of nodes to a growing user population).

With regards to non-scalability, context is crucial.

In public, non-permissioned, blockchain networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum, anyone can function as a node and can also quit being a node at anytime.

This situation requires many more safeguards (aka more computing power and bandwidth usage) because any person could be a bad actor who is Hell-bent on compromising the network to steal funds.

In contrast, permissioned networks have stringent node qualifications that must be met before participating in the validation process. Additionally, if the minimum requirement of work is not done, nodes within a permissioned network are basically fired and replaced by others waiting in the wings.

Consequently, with less "in-house security concerns" and far less computing/bandwidth overhead, permissioned networks are similar to self-contained kingdoms - translated: centralized networks - that are innately faster and more scalable.

But for ALL cryptos and smart contract platforms, non-scalability is a major concern; especially since a sudden wave of mass adoption right now would cripple 99% of them.

Sleeper Cells

(1) For more effective and efficient operations, divide the organization into several autonomous "Need To Know - Activate Only When Needed" sleeper cells (e.g., Layer 2, Off-Chain Transactions like Bitcoin's Lightning Network and Ethereum's Raiden Network).

(2) Order the cells to search for the mission solution in their area of responsibility - their assigned part of the problem - all at the same time . This is called Blockchain Sharding.

Note: Sharding of a blockchain's database only works with PoS (Non-PoW) mechanisms because mining makes the small shards unacceptably vulnerable to compromise.
