The advancement of technologies in recent years has enabled us to produce large databases of health information, and has provided tools to keep track of our health data. The combination of these advances in health care and information technology has been and continues to be a transformative element in the field of health ICT.

The blockchain or digital transaction system is a database shared between many parts, where each data is registered, protected and it is impossible to alter it.

Blockchain technologies have the potential to address the interoperability challenges present in healthcare information systems and be one of the technical standards that allow: individuals, health service providers, health entities and medical researchers, to share electronic health data with security

In order for healthcare to obtain benefits, the Blockchain should function as an access control administrator for health records and data.

  • Clinical history

The medical information of the users is administered by the entities that attend them throughout their life. Consequently, they do not have a single clinical history, but multiple records in different places.
With blockchain it is possible to build a unique database, in which the user owns his medical history and can define who has access to it. It would guarantee the effective treatment of diseases and transparent interoperability between different institutions.

  • Billing management

In regions such as Latin America, the level of corruption within the health system is very high, contaminating an area that should have total transparency. However, through this technology it is possible to automate the activities of claim, adjudication and processing of payments, eliminating completely the intermediaries and associated costs.

  • Drug supply chain

One out of every ten medicines consumed in the world is false. With blockchain, it could be a record of the transit of medicines from the laboratory to the hands of the final consumer, allowing to verify their originality at any time.

  • Record of research results

A high percentage of researchers do not share clinical trials or the results of their work, for fear of being altered or stolen. This reduces the speed with which advances in medicine develop. The chain of blocks is characterized by guaranteeing the immutability of the information that can be the key to constitute a database of global reach in this regard.

  • Cybersecurity in the IoMT (Internet of Medical Things)

With the advancement of technology, it is evident that the number of connected devices that help monitor the health of patients increases every day. However, these systems are exposed to cyber attacks. Blockchain has the potential to guarantee security, privacy and reliability in the interoperability of this data.
As you can see, the scope of the underlying blockchain technology can be translated into substantial improvements for the health sector, with direct benefits for patients.

Advantages of Blockchain in the Health sector

Blockchain technology offers many advantages to medical researchers and healthcare providers. The creation of a single storage location for all health data, the monitoring of personalized data in real time and the security to establish data access permissions would serve as an area of ​​research and also as personalized medicine.

Conclusion

The use of the proposed medical Blockchain would have the potential to involve millions of individuals, healthcare providers, health entities and medical researchers to share immense amounts of health data with guaranteed security and privacy protection. Obtaining, storing and sharing these data would be a scientific basis for the advancement of medical research and precision medicine, helping to identify and develop new ways to treat and prevent disease.
