2018 World Cup Surprise Continues: Spain Disposed Russia
Spain were surprisingly knocked out of the 2018 World Cup. They failed to advance to the quarterfinals after being beaten by Russia on penalties in a match at Russia's Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday, July 1, 2018.
Both teams drew 1-1 until the end of extra time. The penalty shootout was done and Russia finally managed to win the tosan-tosan contest with a score of 4-3. The home side qualified for the quarterfinals, following France and Uruguay.
Spain, who put Andres Iniesta in reserve, excelled at the 12th through an own goal by Sergei Ignashevich. This goal stems from a cross from Marco Asensio, who became a starter to replace Iniesta. Ignashevich, who scrambles the ball with Sergio Ramos, instead directs the ball into his own net.
Russia, who lost top scorer, Denis Cheryshev, due to injury, put on a total defensive formation: 5-3-2. However, on several occasions they are still able to threaten Spain through counterattacks.
In the 40th minute Russia got a penalty after Gerard Pique handballed. He bolted for the ball in the penalty box and a header ball from Artem Dzyuba that led to the goal over his hand. Pique who protested got a yellow card.
Russia could finally equalize after Artem Dzyuba successfully execute a penalty.
The 1-1 score lasts until the end of normal time. The extension was done, but not much has changed. Spain continues to be locked up, Russian discipline survives in total. Score draw still survive. Penalty shootout must be done.
In the penalty shootout, Koke and Iago Aspas kicks dammed Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev. Russia leads 4-3. Russia qualify and will face Croatia or Denmark in the quarter-finals.
In this extra time period created history. Both teams are equally taking advantage of the fourth substitution of the players, according to the new rules applied for this 2018 World Cup.
Spain became the fourth seeded team out. Previously, Germany, Argentina and Portugal were eliminated. For Spain, this defeat ensures they fail to improve the bad record whenever facing the World Cup host team.
