Child Protection is Beyond Custody

Strangely this is a statement that a lot of people will easily agree with without giving it much thought; but the reality on ground is that things are quite different in practice.

From child agency cases against parents to divorce cases, it feels that the law has a very crude understanding about what is in the best interest of the child - which often involves depriving the child of one or more of their parents and extended relatives.

The results of a mere change in location is However quite evident for those paying attention to the actual development of the child - as there are several studies linking separations to mental illness, adverse social behavior and outright physical safety of the of the child.

My major fault line lies In the fact that the system now emphasizes whoever gets the kid, like some kind of prize... Without actually considering the pros and cons of whether the right steps are actually in the child's best interest.

Another thing that I've seen that correlates with what you've said about "who gets the kid" is that they often ask the child. Now, asking the child is certainly logical in many cases but, what if the kid has mental disabilities or just wants to have a sleepover?

My Daughter has figured out that she can force a sleepover like this.

What about children who choose the Father only because he was the lenient one- either at work or too tired to discipline and left that to mother.

When I was a child I would have said anything to go live with my friend's family instead of mine because the grass always looked greener.
