EFFECTS ON DEPRESSION

As of 2011, there were no scientific studies regarding the effectiveness of saw palmetto for depression. However, preliminary studies suggest the antioxidant qualities in saw palmetto flavonoids may help treat depression. Antioxidants are believed to help protect the mind from cognitive decline and other damage done by free radicals. Because saw palmetto features a high concentration of flavonoids, or plant antioxidants, this herb may help prevent and reduce depression symptoms caused by oxidation, or free radical damage.

RECOMMENDED DAILY INTAKE

Saw palmetto may be taken in capsule extract form. The recommended dose for prostate patients is 160 mg twice daily. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests using an extract with 85 to 95 percent fatty acids and plant sterols. While saw palmetto may be consumed as a tea, its primary active ingredients are not water-soluble, and therefore cannot transfer from the herb to the tea.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

Even though saw palmetto is considered generally safe for healthy adults, discuss the use of this herb with your doctor before starting a supplementation program. Common side effects include minor headaches and mild upset stomach. If you are taking antidepressants or any other medications, do not use saw palmetto without the direct consent of your doctor.
