Sore Spot on the Skin From Running

in #blog5 years ago

Although running is a good cardiovascular exercise, sometimes it can be hard on your skin. Blisters are the most common complaint, according to an article in the August 2018 “Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology,” but chafing, jogger’s nipples, warts and pressure generated papules are all conditions that can result from running and make an area of your skin painful.

Blisters

Pressure, friction and heat cause blisters. A shoe that is too small increases the pressure on an area, while a too-large shoe causes friction. Running causes perspiration, which supplies the moisture component. Double layer socks may help prevent blisters, according to the Sports Injury Clinic, which also recommends applying petroleum jelly or zinc oxide to areas prone to blistering. The ointments help socks slide over the area and decrease friction. Taping areas that are likely to blister is another prevention strategy.

Chafing

Chafing occurs when your clothing rubs against the skin or when skin folds rub against each other. Jogger’s nipple is more likely to occur in women who run without a bra or men who wear coarse fabric shirts; the nipple is abraded by friction from clothing and becomes red and sore. To prevent chafing, wear clean, dry clothing that fits properly. Medline Plus recommends 100 percent cotton fabric that is smooth against the skin. Baby powder or petroleum jelly may help protect the skin from friction.

Warts

Warts are caused by the human papilloma virus. Plantar verruca, or warts on the soles of the feet, can become painful. Runners may be more likely to develop warts because their feet provide a warm, moist environment for the virus, and calloused areas are more likely to be susceptible. Warts can be eliminated by a number of medical treatments, although most require that you stop running while you heal. You can help prevent infections by wearing sandals in the locker room or shower.

Piezogenic Pedal Papules

Piezogenic pedal papules are nodules that are most likely to occur on the feet. Piezogenic means “pressure generated.” These papules are thought to be areas where the fat under the skin pushes through the layers of the skin in response to pressure from activities such as running. While they may or may not be painful, in some cases they are painful enough to stop a runner from exercising. Although the pain and papules go away after the feet are elevated for a few minutes, there is no known cure; heel cups may decrease the symptoms.
