Gentian & Weight Loss

in #blog5 years ago

Gentian, a plant known for its colorful, often deep-blue flowers, has a bitter taste that belies its pretty appearance. Gentian has a long of history of use in herbal medicine, particularly in treating digestive disorders. If you experience unintended and undesirable weight loss, some alternative practitioners claim that gentian can help stimulate your appetite, normalize your digestion and increase weight gain. Ask your doctor before taking gentian or any other herbal product if you have unintentional weight loss or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Effects

Gentian belongs to a group of plants known as bitters; one taste will tell you why. Plants with a bitter taste often act as appetite stimulants, although the reason why isn't clear. Gentian has not undergone clinical trials to prove its effectiveness as an appetite stimulant or digestive aid. European herbologists and Chinese herbologists differ in their opinions of gentian, according to iHerb, a website that contains information generated by the EBSCO Complementary and Alternative Medicine Review Board. Chinese herbologists claim it is a strong herb suitable only for short-term use, an assessment the EBSCO CAM Review Board agrees with.

Dose

You can take gentian in several forms, including drops, or tinctures. The traditional dose of gentian is 20 drops of tincture taken 15 minutes before you eat, according to the iHerb website. Some over-the-counter herbal remedies also include gentian.

Bitters

You can also buy gentian in the form of bitters, a type of alcohol. In small doses, alcohol can act as an appetite stimulant, but in larger amounts, it often has the opposite effect. In addition, heavy alcohol use can damage your liver and impair your judgment. Do not use bitters as a form of appetite stimulant without discussing its use with your medical practitioner first.

Risks

Many serious diseases, including cancer, can cause unintended weight loss. See your doctor to find out why you're losing weight before taking an appetite stimulant to treat this problem. Taking gentian to help you gain weight could mask a serious underlying medical problem. Pregnant women, nursing mothers and children should not take gentian, which could cause DNA changes, the iHerb website warns. When taken short term, gentian generally has no harmful effects, although it could worsen ulcer pain and heartburn, the iHerb website also cautions.

My mother has always been concerned about being overweight and wanted to lose weight. It is harmful to experiment with different diets at her age, so she decided to do phytotherapy. Many teas promote weight loss. They include a variety of plants. In general, they are harmless to health if the order of admission. In addition to photo teas, my mother found a program at Reverse Health for weight loss. Fortunately, the program is designed by doctors and is supervised. It is difficult for older women to lose weight best done under a doctor's supervision.
