Make compost with a wormery

in #blog6 years ago

In a small garden, a wormery offers a compact, space-saving way to make excellent compost and liquid fertiliser.
Time to do: all year

A wormery allows you to make great compost and fertiliser simply by letting worms munch through all your household food scraps and peelings. These leftovers would attract vermin if put on the compost heap, but an enclosed wormery turns this waste into rich compost. In addition, the liquid drained off from the base of the wormery makesa brilliant liquid fertiliser when diluted with water. You can buy purpose-built wormeries or make your own from an old compost bin, buying the worms from maiI-order companies or using ones from an existing compost heap. Worms will eat almost anything, but don't add too much food in one go allow the worms to process the material a layer at a time. Don’t add fish or meat waste, seeds or citrus peel, as the worms won't be able to digest these.

TIP Site the wormery in a shady place to stop it getting too hot or drying out, and keep it covered to prevent flies becoming a problem.
