The very vehicle able to run on the open road was powered by steam. However, it was not until the development of the internal combustion engine in the second half of the nineteenth century that motor transport began to be successful. Internal combustion engines are usually fuelled by petrol or diesel. This fuel is burnt (or combusted) within metal cyliders. The burning fuel causes a piston to move up and down inside each cylinder. It is this upward and downward movrment that is translated into a turning movement by the crankshaft, causing the axles and wheels to turn and the car to move forward. The engine also powers an alternator which generates electrical current. This current is stored in the battery and is used for the car's lights, windscreen wipers, radio and other features such as electric windows.

Most petrol engines are quite noisy and give off harmful fumes. Quiters and cleaner electric cars are now being designed. However their batteries need continually recharging so they are only used for short distances.
