Archimedes was a Greek mathematician who lived between about 287 and 212 BC. Archimedes believed in making experiments to prove that his theories worked. He made practial inventions such as the Archimedean screw which is still today to lift water for irrigation. He also worked out the laws which govern the use of levers and pulleys. Pehaps the most famous thing he is remembered for is when he jumped out of his bath and ran naked through the streets shouting 'Eureka!' Which means 'I've found it' in English. Whether this story is true or not, he did find that an object diplaces its own weight of water when floating or submerged.
