The Bristish prime minister, Sir Robert Peel, organized relief for the poorest people of Ireland during the famine. This enabled them to be able to buy cheap corn imported from the United States. It helped to prevent many people from starving to death. But it was a different story when Peel resigned. William Gladstone was the dominant figure in Britain's Liberal Party from 1868 to 1894. He was actually prime minister four times during the reign of Queen Victoria. His belief was that Ireland should run their own affairs, and was a strong supporter of Home Rule wanted a separate parliament to deal with Irish affairs in Dublin.
