Timur Lang (or Timur the Lame), who claimed to be a descendant of Genghis Khan was a ruthless leader. When the Ottomans tried to expand their empire eastwards there was a nasty shock in store for them. Timur had already conquered Persia and ravaged much of central Asia, including Russia and India, before the Ottomans attacked. Timur fell on the Turks like a hurricane, ransacking their chief city in Anatolia, wiping out their army and capturing their leader. Then he began to loot their empire and break it up. That might have been the end of the Ottoman story, but in 1405 Timur died and the last of the Mongol kingdoms fell apart.
