Why were so many artists liberated in the renaissance era?

For the first time since the classical period, artists felt free to show the beauty of the human body. They were helped by two things-the cold Greek ideas of proportion and perspective, and the new research on how the body worked. A nude sculpture such as Michelangelo's David shows a deep knowledge of the action of muscles, sinews and bones. Almost all medieval art had depicted religious subjects. Renaissance artists began to paint other things, such as landscapes and scense of gods and goddesses from mythology. They also painted portraits- of their patrons and of themselves- which expressed human emotions more openly than ever before.
