About 50,000 years ago, the first explorers sailed from Southeast Asia to colonize Australia and New Guinea, which were joined together at that time. Later on, people crossed from Siberia into Alaska, passing over a land bridge that has since disappeared. Marco polo began his voyage to China in 1271. He reached his destination but parts of his journey (shown above with a dotted line) are in doubt. Christopher Columbus discovered Cuba and Haiti in 1491. In 1497 Vasco da Gama set out to find a sea route to India by sailing around the southern tip of Africa. Captain james Cook made three voyages to the South Seas.
