Discovered Something New About Myself: I'm an Austrian Citizen!

So this is something you won't discover about yourself every day!

This weekend I spent some time at my parents' place. It was my dad's birthday on Saturday, so the whole family got together and had some drinks and played some games.

After we were done with the games, my dad told me he has to go to the Austrian consulate in the Hague in a few weeks. Nothing serious, just renewing his Austrian passport. Ever since he moved to the Netherlands, he kept his Austrian citizenship. No specific reason why he did so, he told me.

I asked him, out of pure curiosity, if it would be possible for me to become an Austrian citizen. Since I'm his son, and therefore half Austrian, I figured it must be possible somehow. Then he told me, with a big grin on his face, I am already an Austrian citizen.

He got up, quickly went into his office. Some sound of opening cabinets and drawers came from his office. A few minutes later, he walked to me and gave me a piece of paper. Turns out, I am indeed an Austrian citizen:

As you can imagine, it was quite a pleasant surprise for me! It's also funny that this never came up before! Well, I guess sometimes these things just go this way.

So now the question, would it be possible for me to claim my Austrian passport? Maybe I'll look into this sometime in the future...

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great week!

Wow, lucky you! I would kill for an EU passport... Well, not quite kill... But it would be really handy!

Hey @bengy, thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Yeah, it was quite a nice surprise. Even though I already have a Dutch passport. It's still nice :). I assume you're an Aussie citizen? If you've spent enough time in NL you could get a Dutch passport I believe. But I also think you then would have to forfeit your current citizenship.

Now I got curious, would you give up your current citizenship for an EU one? :)

Both my wife and I are both Australian, and our current idea is that she will get a Dutch passport and I will keep the Australian one. She already has an onbepaalde tijd and had finished her inburgeren exam, so she is is further along that path anyway.

Although, we had been hearing talk of potentially that the dual citizenship idea was being re-examined again, so we are just holding fire for a bit!

Interesting story! Yeah, I would wait a bit then too, who knows... I know when marrying a Dutch citizen, you can obtain both eventually. But in the end, it's all quite a bunch of paperwork and waiting for the IND to file.

Good luck with it all!

Haha, that's funny. It's crazy that you haven't heard anything about this until this point in your life!

Yeah, it was quite a surprise to me :) Sometimes these things happen the way they do...
