Ain't No Second Chances! [ASM #299] (Comic Review) [SPOILERS]

When we last left Michelinie and the gang, we were left with an avid newspaper crafter hell-bent on carefully arranging newspaper clippings onto a cork board.

His ultimate goal seemed to be to present himself as the shadowy figure known only as..

The Crafter!

As we all know, this plot is as plausible as any in the Marvel Universe. However, sadly this isn't the case. If you're new here, a quick flick-scroll to the end will satiate that need to know all immediately. For those who're more patient, keep reading.

Spidey's chasing down Chance!

Peter has no idea that Chance's employer had stunned him and kidnapped him for his own nefarious purposes. Pete's just thinking he's inside a truck sneaking off to get up to some more mischief.

We are actually introduced into the issue with an ass-hat of a kid who's ratting out on Spider-Man because he's climbing about on trucks. Since when do kids treat Spider-Man like he's a common hoodlum causing trouble?

The black suit probably threw the kid off.

The Spider-Man we all know and love wears blue and red. So who's this creep? Well, I still had no explanation of the seemingly non-symbiotic black suit. Until NOW. It's high time I found out to put this mystery to bed.

A brief history of the Black Suit.

INITIATE SUPER-DETECTIVE POWERS!

After some Nancy Drew detective work, I stumbled across this little finding! A big thanks to editer at the time, Danny Fingeroth for pointing out in Amazing Spider-Man #263 that the Black Cat (Felicia Hardy) sewed Spidey a new, sexy costume. No doubt, it was to match her own. Once you go black, you never go back. Meow!

Phew! Ten hours of snuggle time with this feline? Even that would stretch Spidey's stamina. Yikes! What an appetite!

Here are those reference panels we were looking for.

The suit was first published in issue #8 of Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars then again chronologically in Amazing Spider-Man #253. I'd love to give it the time it deserves, so we will address more of the history of the black suit in another article.

Let's return to our current issue of interest.

Mary Jane suggests a night on the town to take Pete's mind off the newest drama. He dons his swankiest eighties gear, while Mary Jane shows off her pins in some of the gawdiest fish-nets I've ever seen drawn. Thanks for the eye-full, Mr. McFarlane!

After feeling like a fish-net outta water and having seen Eddie Murphy at the Spawning Club, back at his home, Peter is kept awake worrying his pretty little face about what will come of the stolen weapons. And he believes it was all the doing of Chance.

SAFEWAY. The most reliable way to hitch a ride.

After some investigation at ESU, Peter's old stomping ground, he pieces the puzzle together connecting Drake to a bunch of land out in New Jersey. It's soon evident to Spidey that Chance was held captive by a bunch of whackos selling space inside a HUGE fortified facility called Sanctum Maximus to the rich elite who think they'll need a safe place to live when..

The shit hits the fan.

The idea that the world is going to turn to shit in one way or another is nothing new. We have television programs dedicated to these "preppers" who devote every waking moment to acquiring water, food, guns and ammo as well as other defensive and tradable goods to serve them when we have the apparently inevitable fekkin' magnetic polar shift. The NRA must foam at the mouth at the thought of peppers stocking up.

Chance and Spidey; Super Friends!

The pair realise two super freaks are better than one and beat the pulp out of Chance's captors, blow the munitions crates and effectively blow up an anti nuclear bunker with exploding assault rifle ammo. What?

And we have a glorious full page of Spidey swinging from a flying Chance as the two head out of the boonies.

Mission accomplished.

Oh. Mary Jane.. Um.. don't go into your apartment!

This fucker's waiting. It's The Crafter!

He's even weaved his own cute spider to the front of his costume with newspaper shreds! Boy, this guy goes the whole nine yards.

And my, look at those teeth! Fuck. It's VENOM.

It's a cameo, but this is the first time readers see the villain that will soon be known as Venom. You must feel honoured right now. I sure do.

The three hundredth issue doesn't disappoint.

Let's momentarily think about it. McFarlane drawing and we've got Michelinie in charge of a now iconic Marvel villain.

Here's a sneak peek at the first page of #300 (25th anniversary issue, mind you).

See you in the next one.

All the best,

Nick.

Perfect. This run is one of my favorite of all time. I had just got into Comics around this time and was not only blown away with Todd’s art but was wrapped up in David’s storytelling. One day I’ll own some OA from this run.

I feel like I've read the comic now!! Awesome review!! I'll be waiting on the next one!! (^_^)

Hey Beat.
