Surfing Right of way

in #blog5 years ago

When you get into surfing you quickly can realize how competitive it can be. For every wave there is, at BEST, two slots for a surfer to fill in. Each wave only has room for two. When you first begin surfing and are only riding in the white water you just go straight in, ... but to truly ride the wave you must ride parallel to the beach.

Because of this organization once you learn to properly surf, you must understand the RIGHT-OF-WAY rules for surfing. There are a couple of basic rules.

Essentially the surfer that is closest to the peak of the wave has the right of way.

  1. Snaking for a wave-

If you are in position for a wave and begin paddling for a wave and someone decides to paddle around you to place themselves closer to the peak that is called "SNAKING". It is considered bad etiquette to do this.

In a typical beach break line up, there are surfers lined up all along the beaches. You judge the beach break over time to determine where the waves are breaking and position yourself where you recognize a pattern. If a wave approaches you may adjust your position to get closer to the peak, but if someone is clearly in position and paddling toward a wave to try and catch it.... you are not not to paddle around them to position yourself closer to the peak.

  1. Dropping in on a someone else's wave-

Another rule to keep things organized and safe on the water is the rule regarding dropping in.

When the surfer closest to the peak is able to catch a wave, that is considered their wave. If you are in position to catch that wave that they are already on,... TOO BAD. That is not your wave.

It is not safe for yourself of the rider on the wave for someone to drop in when they are in the moment on their dream wave.

Hope this helps to keep things on the water safe and fun.
