Photocircle Digest: "Color Combinations"

in #blog5 years ago (edited)

In any aspect of our lives, colors play an important role to our perception. It has the power to affect even our emotions, red excites us, blue calm us, while yellow gives us a warm feeling. Even though it is said that colors can only influence our mood in a short period of time, it's more than enough to capture one's attention.

In photography, a person's first glimpse on the photo will tell whether that person will stop for a closer look or simply pass due to the lack of interest. Since colors play an important role in conveying the message of the photo, a photographer should be able to assess the scene with utmost consideration on the colors present in it.
A common perception of colors into a photograph is whether they compliment each other. The last thing that we want to end up creating is a photo with colors that are either competing for the viewer's attention or confusing the viewer's interpretation. What we want to achieve is the come up with a composition where in the colors are working well with each other. Let's look into an example of a photo that has complimentary colors in it.

The image above has a really striking appeal not only because of the fancy car but most likely because of the amazing interaction of the colors present in the frame. Even though the cold blue color has occupied majority of the image, the striking warm red hue appears more exemplified. It is simply because of the fact that red has the ability to excite us.
Does it only work for this way? Not all the time, in fact it can also be the other way around.

I bet anyone would agree that if the color of the background is more to the blue-ish or green-ish hue, this scene will be perceived as a boring one. The blue pants appear more striking because of the warm rust that serves as its background.
There are a lot cases whereby the cold or warm colors can greatly compliment each other. I find it more attractive in scenes that show a city at night.

As the sun sets below the horizon, the color of the sky changes from warm tint to an astral blue hue. And as the environment become darker, the city lights start to take over the street. In photography, this is the time when the warm colors of the street lights provide a contrasting effect on the cold environmental light.
Below is also a good example of how natural and man made lights can co-exists beautifully.

Great article, I had my first contact with color combinations when i started digital painting, making some painting pop by using warm lights and cool shadows. That why some photos straight from camera can be ok but if we edit the color a little we can make it pop. Colors can also transmit emotions and even change your mood :) thank you for mention

Nice feedback, colors are universal across different art, it's amazing that the concept of colors applies to all. I like playing on it when it comes to editing photos since I can quickly see the impact as I move the sliders for each color that I modify. Again, thanks for the feedback😊
