Lake Surduc - Romania
Lake Surduc is a reservoir lake located in the western part of the country, in Timis County, (in the south-east of the Poiana Rusca Mountains). four kilometers from the town of Surducu Mic, about 100 km away from Timisoara and 30 km from Lugoj. It is the largest lake in western Romania with an area of 460 hectares and is an important tourist attraction.
The dam is 195 m above sea level. The construction of the dam began in 1972. In 1976 water began to accumulate. The reservoir had the capacity of 25 million m³ of water. A second stage in the dam project is scheduled to increase the estimated accumulation capacity to approx. 50 million m³ of water and an area of approx. 530 hectares.The depth of the lake oscillates between 16-20 m.
The dam and Surduc Lake feeds with drinking and industrial water to Timişoara and puts into motion the turbines of a 2 MW micro-power plant.
