COMMON MISTAKES

Lets continue this previous post on common mistakes. I'm going to point out other numerous grammatical mistakes we have making in our everyday writing and conversation.

The following symbols are the keys purposely provided to open your understanding to the problems.

W ---- Wrong
C ---- Correct

39. WAVE | AT

W: The boy wave his father
C: The boy waved at his father
NOTE: "Wave" must always be followed by "at" the preposition should not be omitted.

40. NEW INNOVATION

W: The manager has infused new innovative ideas into the company's policy
C: The manager has infused innovative ideas into the company's policy
C: The manager has infused new ideas into the company's policy
NOTE: The Expression "New Innovation" is redundant because innovation means by definition something new, the introduction of novelty. Therefore, 'new' adds nothing which is not already contained in the meaning of innovation. Similar examples of redundancy of tautology are found in Numbers; 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 22

41. MUTUAL COOPERATION

W: Our mutual cooperation is needed for the party's progress
C: Our cooperation is needed for the party's progress.
C: Our mutuality is needed for the party's progress.
NOTE: Mutual cooperation is tautological because the notion of "mutuality" is contained in the meaning of cooperation, the "CO" part of which means together.

42. INSPITE OF | IN SPITE OF

One common mistake that people have been committing under spelling is the wrong amalgamation of words
CORRECT SPELLINGWRONG SPELLING
In factInfact
In caseIncase
In frontInfront
In spite ofInspite of

43. PROPERTY | PROPERTIES

W: The thieves stole all my properties
C: The thieves stole all my property
NOTE: Property meaning 'personal possessions' is an uncountable noun. It is countable: noun.
  • When it means 'house' as used by estate agents and other involved in the buying and selling of houses.
  • When it means 'characteristics, peculiarity',

Compare:

  • What are the properties of water?
  • Reaction with acids to form oxides is a property of metals.
