Day Trip to Brunei

in #blog6 years ago (edited)
Brunei is a must destination if you happen to be in neighboring Borneo, a day trip suffice. Nestled on the north coast of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia, Brunei offers travellers an architectural, historical and botanic feast.

Unlike it counterparts Brunei does not count Tourism for its economic success, oil and gas have blessed this small kingdom of approximately 423,000 inhabitants. Tourists often come here by default from neighbouring Borneo and leave with something no spa resort can offer: serenity.

A number of local attractions satisfy any self-confessed travelholic.

Top Tourist Attractions In Brunei

The Gadong Market place where you can marvel at local produce is filled with exotic, mouth-watering goods, a rainbow of colours and unfamiliar smells. The traders, whilst very pleasant and eager to satisfy your curiosity are not pushy. Here you can sample a variety of local snacks for very little money if not just a smile.

Another notable place is the Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque. Its golden dome, covered walkways, huge prayer rooms, Italian imported marble and pale blue stone symbolise a union of art, wealth and religion. No expense has been spared here; every detail and motif has an origin, story and purpose.

Although the Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque is grander and its design is more traditional and conservative, having been built to celebrate the Sultan’s 25 years of reign, the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque remains a favourite.

Another very interesting tourist attraction is the Royal Regalia Museum, which houses many royal replicas as well as gifts given to the Sultan over the years. The display can only be described as overwhelming.

The Royal Palace is unfortunately not open to the public except during the annual Islamic celebrations at the end of the fasting month. Sitting on top of a hill one can just make its splendour and only imagine its grandness. With 1788 rooms and 257 bathrooms it stands as one of the largest palaces in the world. Rumour has it that most of the interior is gold and diamond encrusted.

From there you can head to the water village. If you are expecting shabby, run down huts you are in for a surprise. Unlike its neighboring countries people here choose to live in the water village. There are schools, hospitals and even police stations. The houses are vast and beautifully decorated. If you are lucky to be invited in, make sure you accept the local delicacies you are offered and a tour of the house. The sheer size, luxurious décor and multitude of colours here will leave you awestricken.

Daily Life In Brunei

Free education and medical services, lack of personal and corporation tax provide the Brunei inhabitants with a modest yet acceptable taste of the Kingdom’s wealth. It is perhaps the Kingdom’s wealth and the Sultan’s known extravagant taste that mostly draw tourist here.

If you want to experience and not just see Brunei, hire a tour guide. They will most likely tell you many hidden tales of daily life in Brunei.

I love these little places that have not yet been touched by much tourism! I had to look up Borneo on the map, but I found your run-down very worth the read!

I find fascinating living on a wooden pier! Seems like a wet way too live ;p
