Fatigue and Food Digestion

in #blog5 years ago

For the body to work properly, all systems must work together. When one system is disrupted, it can tire you out. Alternatively, when you become fatigued for various reasons, other functions such as digestion are interrupted. A wide range of conditions can lead to fatigue after you eat. Because complications can ensue, you should always talk to your doctor before trying home remedies or any kind of complementary or alternative medicine.

Low Blood Pressure

Fatigue is a common side effect of low blood pressure. While athletes and others who are physically fit often have naturally low blood pressure, if you feel a sudden drop in pressure, irregular digestion might be causing the drop. If you have had trouble keeping food down because of a virus or other illness, you might become dehydrated, which can lead to low blood pressure. A lower-than-normal pressure is anything below 90 systolic over 60 diastolic, according to the Mayo Clinic. Other symptoms of low blood pressure due to dehydration from diarrhea or vomiting include dizziness, nausea and blurred vision.

Food Sensitivities

Allergies and food intolerances can leave you feeling anxious and irritable. Chronic fatigue might result from eating food to which you are sensitive, according to Dr. Lawrence Wilson. While true allergies have more obvious side effects such as anaphylactic shock or convulsions, food sensitivities are much more unobtrusive and difficult to diagnose. Eating too fast can cause food intolerance because you don't give the saliva in your mouth enough time to secrete the enzymes needed for proper digestion. Other causes of food sensitivities include leaky gut syndrome, enzyme imbalances and genetics.

Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is a condition that causes damage to your small intestine, interfering with proper nutrient absorption. Gluten intolerance is the main cause of celiac disease. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and many other products such as lip balm and some vitamin supplements. Celiac disease is inherited and triggered by emotional stress, surgery, pregnancy or a viral infection, according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, or NDDIC. In addition to fatigue, other symptoms of celiac disease include joint pain, canker sores, depression, anxiety and arthritis.

Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a form of irritable bowel syndrome that creates ulcers in your colon and rectum. According to the NDDIC, the cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown, though doctors believe it is related to the immune system causing your digestive system to react negatively to bacteria in your digestive tract. Fatigue, abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea are common symptoms of the disease. Other symptoms include joint pain, loss of appetite, skin lesions and rectal bleeding.
