Blockchain Revolution

in #book5 years ago

So I guess this will be the first book for my crypto/blockchain shelf in my personal future library. I still laugh a little about the way I came into possession of it. It felt so coincidental and at the same time in it was meant to be way. If there is one thing I absolutely hate, it is waiting. No matter what shape or form. Waiting in the line, waiting for a call or waiting for an appointment. Waiting is so boring. I happened to be waiting again when I decided to kill it and walk around the shopping mall.

Of course I stopped at the bookstore, with no particular book in mind just to look around at the colorful covers that sometimes can be true art masterpieces themselves. One particular shelf was marked For thinkers, it caught my curiosity right away. Books from astronauts and inspiring people such as Peter Thiel and others. And there it was Blockchain Revolution by Don Tapscott and Alex Tapscott. It made me laugh out loud. Not even five minutes later I happily walked out of the store with the book in my bag.

I am not very fast reader or have abandoned books almost completely since I discovered Steem, but I’ve decided to read this one as soon as can and as fast as I can. I will take some notes that I hope to compile in some sort of review later.

This bear market is not just pain, suffering and fud. It is time for opportunities as well. That includes learning opportunities. Maybe it will be a waste of time or maybe it will provide me with a different perspective about the underlying technology of the cryptocurrencies and how it will impact and change the world in the future. Even skimming through the five pages of acknowledgments consisting of some pretty big names I am curious to learn more about their views about the blockchain space.

According to Guardian it is “A highly readable introduction to a bamboozling but increasingly important field”. For someone like me who only now slowly discovers and tries to grasp how this shit works, it sounds extremely comforting.

All you need is a cup of hot chocolate, keep calm and learn more about the blockchain, right? ^^

Well, well yes! However, I would like to ask something of you at this part too.

Will you share your discoveries about the blockchain? Have you found something that would be a must consume about the blockchain and crypto?

It could be anything. Books, podcasts, news sites about crypto, your favorite Steemians who speak a lot about this stuff you’d recommend to follow, articles, talks from conferences etc. I would be very interested to see what turns up and check it all out and I am sure many of you would appreciate others sharing too. You could write it in the comments or dedicate a whole post for it and leave a link in comments here. That would be awesome!

We are all in this together. We come from different backgrounds and different walks of life, we have different levels of understanding this technology and yet somehow we all ended up here, on the chain. Isn’t it just beautiful?

Everyone has different learning strategies so once you recognise what you need for yours, create the environment to suit.

For me, once I have some kind of mental visual framework, I can keep refining, investigating, discarding, replacing as new information arrives or things change. It is an ongoing working model of all the worlds I try to understand. Once I have some frame, the doing part feels much simpler and clean.

I hope you learn a lot from the book :)
...

And then teach me :P

Strategies yea ^^' I mean sometimes the amount of information, dynamic and always changing environment can be extremely overwhelming and scary too when you don't even know where to start, which end. There is no guide for dummies with this stuff, is there? However, I will take your advice on consuming differently and more actively seek opportunities to understand and learn, instead of avoiding it because blockchain is scary and complicated, and oh my goodness wow.

Teach you? Lol

There is no guide for dummies with this stuff, is there?

Isn't this Steem? :D

because blockchain is scary and complicated, and oh my goodness wow.

be careful out there ;)

There are many areas I am uncomfortable with but slowly I am getting a better grip on at least the main points. There is a lot of technical sides I need to dive into... tomorrow :D

Listening to song of the day whilst counting the number of marshmallows in that coffee :O

I am not very fast reader or have abandoned books almost completely since I discovered Steem...

Same :/

It's debateable weather the text 'here' is more interesting or not. I guess something is more interesting, or else I'd be reading a book. Let us know if you find any golden nuggets inside :)

Hey, no judging my cup of sugar, alright? :P It was delicious.

The way I see it the text 'here' is more raw, appearing as events develop and unfold and the feedback loop is immediate. The book might be just a very long post by someone who has dug through a lot of interesting discoveries and information themselves. I will for sure let you know if I find something interesting. Hopefully :)

Yes I'm envious :) Mine look so plain in comparison.

I agree, certainly more raw but I think that's OK - we are not all authors. Attention spans for screen content are likely less too, but I suppose I should mix screen/book a bit more.

I hope it's an interesting read and you have parts to share. Time for a coffee, black, no sugar, and no mallows :P

This is the best image I’ve seen on the internet today! 😊 I just want a cosy sofa and a fireplace now, with that book and hot chocolate - heaven! 😄

I notice I’m more of a YouTube viewer than reader when it comes to blockchain and crypto. I have enjoyed Don Tapscott’s TED talk and other speeches - he explains everything so well!! And of course Andreas Antonopolous.

And if I want to stay up to date with what’s happening in the crypto space right now, I just check out @crypt0’s daily videos.

Absolutely, we all should enjoy a bit of fireplace coziness and intellectual relaxation :)

Oh I've been meaning to watch his TED talk actually, they even mention it in the beginning of the book. Will check out also Andreas Antonopolous and @crypt0, thank you so much for your recommendations.

My journey down this “rabbit hole” actually began with the FUD of 2015 when prices declined horribly and after watching it on the news I was interested in learning about bitcoin so I actually bought a Bitcoin for Dummies book! After reading about it there I used a lot of their references for more research until I decided to buy some as an experiment. After taking months to choose and open an account, I finally bought some and left them in the waiting game. As prices started to rise, I got more encouraged and actually purchased the same book you did. My thought was to think if I should sell given the rise in price but after reading that book, I was more encouraged about the opportunity of blockchain. So I waited and eventually did sell but it was to diversify into other blockchain projects and cryptocurrencies! I still search and purchase a numbers of books on the subject given this new found passion (although I am behind in reading them). Self education is the best investment you can do so keep it up.

Thank you for sharing what I imagine just a tiny bit of your journey down the "rabbit hole". Before Steem I heard of Bitcoin of course, but never really paid much attention to it unfortunately. I knew it was digital currency and I began noticing a lot of talk around it in news and also in films.

Funny you mention a Bitcoin for Dummies book, cause it is really hard to imagine such book staying relevant for long as the environment and technology is developing constantly and I can't really see how it could keep up information wise, but at the same time they will serve as part of history of it all.

Oh, now I feel even more excited about digging trough the book since you say it encouraged you about the potential of the blockchain, because somehow it seems to me very important part to understand and I am not entirely sure I am grasping it fully.

Thank you once again for sharing your story and encouragement! We live in exciting times :)

I never fully trust a Dummies book but it provided some simple understanding the blockchain concept as well as the whole wallet creation aspect which was always confusing as well. It at least provided a good foundation for me to continue to research more myself.

About your question... Yeah, I always share my knowledge and discoveries that I made about blockchain to everyone...
Besides, I have a podcast (only in Portuguese, sorry) here that I always share everything that I discover and know to everyone, since I think that can increase the perception of people who can improve my knowledge too.
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers!

Oh that's pretty cool. There are quite a lot of Steemians who would appreciate some good content in Portuguese I am sure.

Absolutely, as we discover things for ourselves and share them with others who then immediately join in with their insight of things it is great way of grasping concepts, inner workings and ideas of things. Sometimes really increasing our field of vision.

Thank you for stopping by, appreciate it :)

Yeah, the Brazilians and Portugueses are quite a few people but I think that many of them enjoy too.
About the share the content with others, I like to do that, because this also force me to read more about, since I will explain that for people and they will ask me a lot of things, so I need to be prepared, like the pyramid of leaning says:

Indeed, it encourages ourselves to know more in greater detail when it is done in consideration of sharing knowledge with others.

I don't think I had come across with this image of learning pyramid before, but it makes a lot of sense. Thank you for sharing.

@m31 what do you think of that book so far? I’m hoping to get a Kindle for Christmas and will want to add titles like this to my reading list.

So far it shows some great signs of being very interesting actually, it is also the updated version of it that includes things on ICOs and Smart Contracts and the authors of Blockchain Revolution also recommend some more books about this field that I probably will have a look at myself later too. I will try and write an actual review of the book once I've done reading it.

dangggg that hot chocolate looks amazing!

Haha, yea. Guess what else? It was so good ^^
