Just So Stories Just a Story, a collection of short stories of bedtime writers composed by renowned classical novelist Rudyard Kipling and his Indonesian version - the book I read - was translated by popular Indonesian writer Maggie Tiojakin. Kipling, the great Indian-blooded writer in Britain, famous for his work The Jungle Stories, showed his expertise in lulling children with beautiful fairy tales full of moral messages before they fall asleep in this book. No wonder if the writer caliber Maggie Tiojakin captivated to translate the tales of Nobel prize-winning writers.
My first impression when reading the first story in Just So Stories Just Story is ... sleepy.
Proven not, how reliable Kipling in stringing this lullabies story, hehehe ...! Although it can be read randomly, but I prefer to read books or stories in sequence from beginning to end.
The first story entitled Why Pope Can not Eat Humankind tells the ingenuity of a sailor so that he does not end up being whale food. Basically, the tales in this book are loaded with wise messages in life, especially to be taught to children. The message that can be drawn from the first story is to invite the child to think smart and courageous even though faced is a big problem symbolized as a whale who can engulf anything in this story.

There are two stories that are serialized in Just So Stories book, the title: Illustrated Letters and How the Alphabet Formulated. The prologue sentence above is part of the dialogue in the Illustrated Illustrated story. The two titles are quite interesting to me, because from that story, we can find out how prehistoric humans created the writing (of course Kipling's version history) so easily understood by the children.
Kipling conveys the importance of humans to be able to read and write with humor inserts. In the story, it tells how bothered humans if they are illiterate, how an immigrant from another village that is innocent, should be accepted by Taffy's mother (the character in the story) due to Taffy's mother who misinterpreted the picture of a message made by his son. It is also said that the form of Latin alphabets that we know today comes from the appearance of the human mouth when reciting vowels or consonants.
There is also a story titled Crabs And The Ocean Wide. The story is also quite interesting to me, because in the verse verse (which is always included at the end of the story) is written general knowledge about marine which aims to arouse children's curiosity so they want to find out and learn. Kipling successfully convey geography in the packaging of history and fairy tales.

This bedtime story is essentially a very beautiful piece of literature and clearly demonstrates the imagination of its great author, lulling but leads to reality. No wonder if Kipling was awarded a literary nobel. Maggie Tiojakin seemed to strive to choose the right diction so that the main message of the story remains conveyed without Maggie having to compete with Kipling.
