Booklover's Day: What's On YOUR Nightstand?

in #books6 years ago (edited)

Today is Booklover's Day, a celebration of everything there is to love about the written word. As proposed by the radiant @ilsaione, the question is: what are you currently reading?

This bad boy right here is my current obsession: The New Annontated H.P. Lovecraft edited by Les Klinger. At nearly 900 pages, it's a behemoth to be sure. You don't casually flip through it, it's meant to occupy a prominent place on your desk more easily than your lap, and it's filled to the brim with biographical information, illustrations, asides, and commentary to help bridge the gap between the early twentieth century when Lovecraft did most of his writing to the early twenty-first century where terms have evolved, geography changed, and things aren't the way they were in Lovecraft's era.

The down side to this collection is that even as large as it is, it contains only a sample of Lovecraft's work since annotating Lovecraft's entire body of literature would be a Herculean task indeed. That's OK though, since it gives you the perfect excuse to add this to your library as well:

This is a Barnes & Noble edition of Lovecraft's complete fiction, presented in a gorgeous leatherbound edition with gold-gilt edging. If you collect fine bindings such as Easton Press, this slips right in on the shelf but still sticks out thanks to its purple and black theme. With both of these on your shelves, you've got basically every major and minor work the dude ever wrote at your fingertips, with roughly 1/5th or so of them completely annotated.

It's a match made in Kadath, a book lover's delight, and my recommendation for a Booklover's Day acquisition!

Sort:

Oh man, which 'nightstand'?

By my bed is Understanding Movies by Louis Giannetti, on the bathroom vanity is Practicing History by Barbara Tuchman, on the phone is Neal Stephenson's REAMDE, and the current popular book in the nursery is A Whisper is Quiet.

John Le Carre's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and the last book of Elizabeth Bear's Eternal Sky trilogy, Steles of the Sky. I've also got an edition of the complete Lovecraft sitting there, but it'll have to go back to the Library today.

I didn't know there was a booklover's day!!!! That's great. Reading a good book is invaluable.

I've been on a Ram Dass kick lately and am reading Grist for the Mill. Soooo good!

Oh! I am so sorry I missed this! I love fiction and will try to check this out. I am putting it on my list of books to read! Thank you for doing a post about it!
