My last Raymond Carver post was the first edition of Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?, his first collection of short stories. Cathedral was his third major-press collection, published in 1983. If there was ever a doubt in anyone's mind that Carver was the most influential short story writer of the second half of the twentieth-century, the publication of Cathedral put those doubts to rest. Here we have a genuine master at the top of his craft. Reading these stories is like getting a glimpse into the ordinary working class life of the couple next door. Oftentimes, nothing major happens plot-wise. But this is the point. Nothing needs to happen, or nothing is happening, except the quiet ennui of the modern American. This is the first printing:
