The Last Temptation, Nikos Kazantzakis. First Edition.

Nikos Kazantzakis (1883-1957) was a Greek writer who was widely considered to be the twentieth century giant of Greek writing, having been nominated for the Nobel Prize in 9 different years. He wrote over a dozen novels, along with plays, travel books, memoirs, and philosophical essays. His most enduring novel is probably his 1955 The Last Temptation. It's an historical novel of the life of Jesus, with the central thesis being that Jesus, while free from sin, was still subject to fear, doubt, depression, reluctance, and lust. Since he overcame these temptations and still did God's will, his life held more significance than almost any other philosophers. The novel was highly controversial upon its release, with the The Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church in Athens wanting to ban it in Greece, saying "This novel, which is derived from the inspiration of the theories of Freud and historical materialism, perverts and hurts the Gospel discernment and the God-man figure of our Lord Jesus Christ in a way coarse, vulgar, and blasphemous." The novel is also noteworthy for its adaption into Martin Scorsese's controversial 1988 film, The Last Temptation of Christ. This is the first UK edition, with a striking dust jacket:
