Boredom: A Love Story

in #boredom5 years ago (edited)

My elders used to tell me:

“Only Boring People Get Bored!”

I don’t think I ever believed this... Everyone gets a little bored sometimes... Ultimately, only comfortable people get bored. Truly, I consider boredom to be something of a blessing! If you’re bored at home, you have the time off from work or school to be bored. You’re probably sitting around watching Netflix or browsing Steemit or whatever other kind of shit you do on the days when you lay in bed until 3PM. When you think about it, most people in this world don’t have a chance to have these basic luxuries, to feel boredom every once in awhile.

At this point you might be saying “Well yeah, boredom at home is fine... But boredom at work sucks!!!”

Fair point, I do understand. We all hate our mind-numbing daily grinds sometimes. However, some appreciation can generally be found with a simple change in perspective. Banging your head against the wall day in and day out at your awful office job? Imagine trading that boredom for the stress of being a surgeon or a firefighter! Or the emotional wreckage of being a social worker (not always obviously, but some social workers carry a lot of baggage). These jobs might have more social merit/better pay, but I don’t know if I’d trade my daily lazy kitchen boredom for these positions. They are totally honorable and kick-ass, but... Not for me. I prefer zoning out and topping pizzas for now.

IMO, boredom at school generally breaks down 80/20. 20% of student boredom is shitty class structures and boring topics. Happens a lot. That being said, 80% of student boredom is a failure to apply oneself and make passing a goal. Sometimes you get bored when applying yourself, but oftentimes you’ll feel accomplished or frustrated instead, which are both healthy learning emotions. Even if you do stay bored at school (which is natural, of course), even that is a privilege. Some people around the world fear going to school due to acts of terrorism. Some live in fear of bullies at school. These fears will keep the mind busy, keep the boredom at bay. If you have the freedom and comfort to be bored, you’re well off in my mind.
