Among the many glorious things about this article, which I understand launched his writing career, I like best the way that the professional kitchen becomes a symbol of life itself, in all its messiness and improvisation. The ideas we have about chefs, like those about life in general, commonly do not do their subjects justice. Everything is always messier and more complicated than you imagine. And we are all more connected, more intimately, than we ever know.

I hope those two have found peace, and I hope that anyone walking the earth who suffers similarly can find the help they need to avoid tragedy. Even in the worst of times, there's love, laughter, and all the other joys of life on this crazy planet. Reach out. It's there. We're there.
