The Dirty World Of Boxing

What do you expect when the top promoter controlling boxing was a chap called Don King. He was definitely no angel and saw boxing as an opportunity to make some serious money. He used charity as a guise to make his first promotion look more legitimate. The funds raised were meant to go to a local hospital in Cleveland and of the $85000 raised they only received $1500.

Unfortunately Don dominated the world of boxing from the late 1970's up until the late 1990's and had some of the best boxers in the world on his books. Muhammad Ali was under Don's spell and would later regret having anything to do with him. Most boxers that worked with Don were screwed along the way.

Don arrived with Foreman and left with Ali as he was the new champion. This fight was known as the rumble in the jungle fought in Zaire (Congo then).

A standard promoters cut on a contract was 33% and Don would normally take 50% or more. There is a list of well known boxers who never saw anything close to what they were promised in payment. The problem was he controlled boxing and was so powerful he could end your career.

King had a special contract for any boxer wishing to fight against one of his boxers. The paperwork stipulated that if you won you would automatically fall under his wing and be promoted by him. Boxers that refused this found it difficult to obtain fights and this is why most of them eventually agreed.

The IBF President Robert Lee was on Don's payroll and is known to have fixed the rankings favoring Don's boxers. He was rumored to be tied to the underworld with the Gotti family and when questioned by the FBI he pleaded the 5th amendment. At the time the mob was heavily involved with boxing and fights were fixed. They saw this as a big payday and boxers were paid to throw fights in order to be allowed a title shot at some point. This is why some boxing decisions don't make sense and the scorecards just look wrong as the result was never in doubt before the fight and was rigged.

He saw the fighters as a way to a means and to make him hat he was. He often would dazzle the fighters with bags full of cash and notably Muhammad Ali fell for this and dropped a $1 million Dollar lawsuit for a mere $50 000 cash sweetener.

His last big payday when Tyson scuppered the fight with Holyfield, biting a chunk out of his ear.

He bit off more than he could chew with Mike Tyson as Mike was swindled out of more than $20 million and he hunted Don King down and beat him up.Don King is semi retired today but will always sniff out a buck or two.

Cosmic justice.

What's your take on how this affected the popularity of professional boxing among fans? Was there any effect at all?

Definitely a negative and it is just such a shady sport. I used to watch world title fights regularly and was put off by it favoring one or two. The promoters protected their boxers way too much and a prime example was Don King paid the IBF so that George Foreman didn't have to defend his title and he could fight someone easier. I rarely watch fights today and I hate to know how much doping is going on in this sport.

I've become very sceptical of the value of professional sports these days. The only pro sports I've watched in recent years is the ice hockey world championship tournament and the Olympics. But I've tended to forget to watch even the important games in recent tournaments.

I agree with you and I just see as everyone is on something today. The problem is the testing can't pick it up currently so everything we are watching today is most likely fake and doesn't count. From my understanding every sport is tainted as the benefits of recovery time from injury or fatigue is cut by 70 percent.

Such physiological facts are hard evidence for the prevalence of doping use pretty much like trace amounts of drugs in wastewater is evidence for drug use in the population.

Another of the great dictators of sport although I actually thought he was dead!

I don't know why, but I always lumped Bernie Ecclestone as a similar category as King, perhaps because he also had absolute control over a full sport, another character I venomously don't like was and is Sepp Blatter and having seen his successor, Gianni Infantino, fawning over Putin at the last world cup, I can't say I like him very much either.
FIFA Has been one huge old boys gravy train for years.

He is still alive and kicking and is in his late 80's now. I don't think it is healthy with these dictators and FIFA is no better than the other two you mentioned. I think Gianni Infantino is just a new younger face but nothing has really changed. Their motto must be just don't get caught as we can't protect you then.

What they did to Mike was awful. He was basically abused in order to get as much money out of him as possible. Don-k King is a smuck and deserved prison time IMO for not just that but for killing a guy in the 70s or whatever it was, I wasn't even born back then :) Anyways, I hate everything about him, I gladly took that out of my system. Cheers!

He killed a guy who was trying to rob his bookies apparently. The problem was he shot the guy in the back and should have done time. He knew too many people even in those days and that is where he was inked to the Gotti family.

Thanks for an awesome explanation!

I never realized that Tyson beat up King. I just remember all of his antics and seeing him being all loud and stuff. It's too bad that so many great names were taken advantage of.

I have queries related to sports, please help me(sorry that it is not related to your content).

If i self upvote in sports, how will be the author/curator split. Will i it get both of them?
If I power down sports, how much time does it take to get the liquid sports?

Yes you do get both of them. Remember it is 50/50 so a post that has 1000 sports on it you will most likely receive a little over 50 percent as an author. Self voting helps on curation, but it is minimal . I upvote normally the next day or so as it helps everyone who has supported me get more curation as well.
The power down is over 9 months so if you have 9 000 staked you would receive 1000 tokens per month or 250 weekly. I am not 100 percent sure if it is weekly or monthly though.

Thank you so much
