THE GAIN-MENTALITY THAT KILLS BUSINESS

We enter business for different reasons but the most important thing is making profit/gain. Gain/profit is the extra money we make after removing capital and other expenses spent such as salaries and/or miscellaneous. With that defined, the gain-mentality is entering a business with the only mentality of just gaining. The people with this mentality do not care about the welfare of the business or the way the business is run, they just want more profit and move on. It has been proven that this mentality is wrong for a business and can ruin it.

Most successful business owners start with the growing mentality. This mentality is for the idea to turn to a business, employ capable people and get it running. They storm up with more ideas to make sure it floats even if they have to make losses at the beginning. With time, the business gets successful and the gain come in. Very few businesses grow when our eyes are fixed only on the gains even when they have not kicked off yet.

The gain mentality can be traced to employees too. They apply for jobs based on fat salary instead of the experiences they gather. This put off most interviewers and employers of labour. Imagine an employee that doesn’t care if the company grows or not, he/she just wants a full salary at the end of the month. Is that a good employee in your dictionary? Definitely a big NO. We grow a company together if we contribute our quota by doing our job function diligently and wisely. The salary will increase (which is a gain) if our contributions help the company make lot of gains.

Business owners should read books so they can learn so much about starting and running a business. With so much money/capital at your disposal, your business can fail woefully if you don’t develop the right mentality to help survive your business. Gain is a bonus for running a successful business, it comes after:

  • Your hard work: This goes a long way, this is your input to the business. Hard work includes your diligence, intelligence, resilience and push. The combination of these will definitely mean you are ready to run a successful business.

  • Picking the right team: No man is an island, you can’t do all the work alone. There are times you start alone but be prepared to bring people in. Conduct the interview by yourself so you can appoint people you can conveniently work together.

  • Selecting the right mentor: We need mentor/role model. They have run successful businesses and always have the right answers to our questions. This is why it is good to read, you get to read about people you can relate your ideologies and philosophies with.

Finally, a business is more than the gain after all your input. If you remove the gain from your business, will it still stand? Remember this question every time you think of gain more than the business. Let your business grow, contribute your best to push it and the profit will come automatically. If it doesn’t come yet, it doesn’t mean it won’t. Put on your positivity mentality and believe your business will be successful. Gain-mentality is not the right mentality for the success of your business.
