Being self employed is getting popular by the day and just like every other thing in life, it has it's own disadvantages and risks. The freedom can be so intoxicating thus making room for hazardous habits that puts our entire health and well being at risks. There are tons of health risks of being self employed, one that every self employed person should look out for and avoid.

These health risks are created by habits that self employed people get addicted to as a result of the freedom gotten in entrepreneurship and not having anyone to answer to except themselves. Here are the habits and how to manage them..

Chain Smoking

For someone that smokes, a pack of cigarettes will be a way to cope with stress.. Keep in mind that organisations do not allow employees to smoke in their work places. But an entrepreneur don't have that rule guiding them, so how best can a smoker cope with stress except by smoking and soon it gets out of hand. But you can quit this habit by trying a number of things:

  • Vaping: This is the use of electronic cigarettes instead of the normal cigarette, it is completely healthy.. You can learn more about it here

  • Snack instead, instead of smoking, uses snacks or chewing gum to get over the urge.

  • Find a way to reward yourself when you don't smoke, like a reward system. Set a target and reward yourself when you meet them, it could be from smoking 10 sticks to just 1 or 2 sticks..

  • Avoid the things that triggers you to smoke.

Eating a lot

I did that a lot when I started out. I found out that sitting at a spot on my system for so long made me crave all kinds of food, I got lucky because of my body size, I hardly add weight over food.. But people end up being obese and sick by over eating. Some people eat to relieve stress, some crave for some flavors and just go for it. Either way, it can be managed..

  • Schedule your meals.. The body responds to habits and gets used to what we do.. When you set and follow a strict schedule, with time you will discover that you are not even hungry until the stipulated time.

  • Eat smaller portions of food or chew a gum instead. Instead of eating all at once, you can just take small portions when you crave them. Eating small portions of food and chewing a portion for a long time prevents weight gain.

  • You can eat celery instead, it doesn't have calories and you won't get over weight with it.

Lack of Exercise

I think this is the most common among entrepreneurs. A guy once said that exercise are for jobless people, that rich people don't have time to exercise because they are busy making money.. Well, if we don't have time to exercise, we will end up making money to pay hospital bills. Here is how to manage this.

  • Running 30 minutes a day can go a long ways.. Experts say this helps our heart, reduces our chances of having sicknesses.

  • Do a few stretches per day, starting a day with stretches can help sharpen the mind.

  • Take a few breaks, during the break walk more and sit less, this can increase one's focus.

These are actually little things the self employed can do to maintain a healthy life style. It is cheaper that any hospital bill.
