Have you ever wondered why some people are great at negotiations while others suck at it? It is not about being persuasive, it is understanding that negotiation is a game.. And just like any other game, it has it's own rules, strategies, wins and loses and the earlier you come to terms with it, the better you will be in your negotiations with clients, customers or any other concerned party. So how can you become better at Negotiations:

Strategize

Pick your own strategy based on your desired outcome. Everyone wants a win win result, where you and the other party are satisfied with the agreed outcome.. You get what you want and the other party gets what they want in return and every one is happy. But there are times in business and negotiations that a win lose out come is inevitable, In this case strive to get what you want and don't bother about hard feelings.. This is why Negotiation is a game and you shouldn't attach too much emotions.

When you are done picking your strategy, make sure you research the other party for their strengths and weakness.. Knowing these will help you pitch your request and get what you want..

Prepare your Tactics

Before meeting the other party, prepare your method of presentation specially with the information you have gotten from the first step. You can decide to use a number of tactics:

  • Asking for more than you need: It won't hurt to ask for more, besides the other party always gives less than what you asked for, so it's a win..
  • Offer a friendly gesture, which means that every good offer will be reciprocated on your own part.
  • Be creative. In cases where the other party can't afford what you are asking, try to ask for other things that could substitute your demands.
  • Don't act too interested: Showing that you are willing to take or leave a deal gives you more leverage..
  • Red herring method: This is my favorite. This is pretending you want something else in order to be offered what you need instead. to the other party it looks like you are compromising the former to take up the later but in the real sense you actually need the later, you just made them believe you don't need it so that they could give it to you. Sounds manipulative but it is effective.

In conclusion, sometimes sealing a deal can take a little nudge. In some negotiations, your willingness to walk away with no deal is the most powerful weapon you have.. But with the tips above you can get started to becoming a professional..
