Conflicts are inevitable, it always happen when two or more people are involved but what matters is our approach towards it.. Conflicts are also inevitable in every workplace, that is one of the reasons why big companies have the Human Resource Department as it is one of their responsibilities to resolve conflicts a between employees and foster a healthy work environment.

But for a small business owner with a small team and no Hr department, it is left for you, the business owner to resolve conflicts among your team. One disadvantage of a conflict is that if left unresolved, it can create a toxic environment and a toxic environment hinders productivity. So it is really important that conflicts are resolved before it escalates.. So here are few ways to manage conflicts.

  • There are always signs..Apart from the employees that might blow their issues out of proportion, there are quiet ones that tend to keep things to themselves thereby brewing resentment in their hearts. So watch out for the signs by checking in and communicating with the employees regularly.

  • Now that you've spotted a conflict or a rift and want to resolve it. Be open minded, let go of any stereotypes you might have about the individuals involved. Conflict resolution is aimed at achieving a positive result not proving a point. So don't try to be right but instead try to achieve a positive result.

  • If you are confused at what to do or how to approach the situation, then it is best to step back a little bit and re evaluate the situation. Maybe talk to a friend or a confidant outside your organization for an opinion or advice on what to do.. Don't just rush into the situation.

  • Don't resolve a conflict over a text or messaging App.. People are tend to be different online, besides body languages can't be seen over texts or email.. So always meet face to face with the individuals involved to resolve the conflict, that way you can see their expressions and know the right way to react..

  • Good listeners don't just make great learners, they also make great leaders. So listen.. Don't try to talk the individuals down just because you are the boss, listening is an important skill towards resolving conflicts effectively.

  • Everyone deserves respect, no matter their level. So during the resolution process, be polite, courteous and kind, this will encourage a calm atmosphere which will most likely leave everyone satisfied.

  • When employees feel they don't have a voice, it creates a breeding ground for conflicts to sprout easily. Give them a voice, it could help dissolve conflict before it gets out of hand.

  • Always encourage your employees to take responsibility for their actions and not put blames on people. Most times conflicts arise as a result of one's inability to take responsibility for their actions. As the boss, lead by example. Take responsibility when you make mistakes.

  • Have an open discussion with your employees, give them an opportunity to contribute their thoughts on what should be done for things to be better. Let the employees be given an opportunity to evaluate their own behaviors.

  • Always let the employees know how important their actions and behaviors is to the productivity of the company. Constantly remind them of this.

  • Finally conflicts is not a bad thing, in fact it helps foster relationships.. People disagree to agree. So don't pretend like it's not there thereby allowing it to turn toxic. Conflicts become disruptive when you fail to embrace it and look away. Embrace it, resolve it and watch your work environment become healthier.
