Living a happy life

Keep people in your life who truly love you, motivate you, and make you happy. If you know people who do none of these things, let them go. For happiness don't pursue satisfaction, but pursue heroism. The lives of scientists, considered as Lives, almost always make dull reading. For one thing, the careers of the famous and the merely ordinary fall into much the same pattern, give or take an honorary degree or two, or an honorific order. Living a happy life is more than enough. Work and happiness are like mother and daughter; work brings forth happiness, but hard work brings forth great happiness. If a scientist were to cut his ear off, no one would take it as evidence of a heightened sensibility; if a historian were to fail to consummate his marriage, we should not suppose that our understanding of historical scholarship had somehow been enriched. Happy is what I feel; Joy is what I experience.
