Harvesting Dandelion Greens in Coronado California for Fruits and Veggies Monday

in #busy5 years ago

I looked at the garden in front of my apartment in Coronado California and saw a lot of dandelions growing. I knew there was no pest control or fertilizer used so I decided to harvest.

The overgrown garden looked like this, and I am only showing you a small part of it in this photo.

You can see some of what I pulled out in this shot. I had to hunt, but it was worth it!

The fruits of my labor!

Nice roots. I do not show this step here, but I left the roots in baking soda water overnight and they cleaned up well. I used kitchen scissors to cut them and they went into soup.

Delectable greens:

And lots of them.

Here are the greens torn up and ready to wash. Later I learned to wash them before tearing, but this was my first attempt.

I used baking soda to help clean the greens.

Here is the water after the greens were washed.

Pretty dirty.

And nice clean greens!

This was only the first washing. I had so many that it took me a few hours to get through them and I stopped taking photos!

I used these greens in soups and salads and froze a lot for smoothies.

After this first try, I started harvesting once a month or so and got the greens when they were younger. My neighbors thought I was crazy, but I did not care. Healthy food for free is just the kind of thing I love!

My post today is for in @lenasveganliving's fruitsandveggiesmonday contest, currently being hosted by @plantstoplanks while Lena is under the weather. If you eat fruits or veggies, take photos and you can enter too!

Statistics say that only 5% of people with health resolutions for the New Year will still be on track after Super Bowl Sunday. Is your fitness equipment still out handy, and are you still on a "diet?"

I lost "Half My Size" eight years ago by using natural methods. I started on December 5th and did not give up. You can do it too!

Free, fresh and delicious! Doesn't get a whole lot better than that! I need to keep an eye out for some of those when the weather gets warmer here to see if I can do the same. :)

I was so happy with this project. As long as you know they are not fertilizing or doing pest control, you are good to go and these are delicious too! Thank you so much for this contest, @plantstoplanks. I will be back for sure.

I see that is truly lots of work, but you got some nice greens full of nutrients, so clearly it was worth it. I love all the photos you took Sharon too; well done my Dear 🌿😍🌿

it's wonderful to be able to harvest your own fresh herbs from the garden.

It sure is. They are so fresh and you cannot beat the price.

Congratulations @fitinfunfood! This post was chosen to be featured in this weeks SoCal Spotlight!!
Thank you so much for being part of the #socalsteemit community.

now I feel so stupid after reading your post @fitinfunfood .. hahahaha, I never thought about using this plant for a soup, I just rooted it and throw it away to the hole where I keep my organic waste was.. Now I never seen any dandelions around anymore.

After this, I started seeding them! If I saw a flower somewhere that had seeds I would bring it home and sprinkle them around. They are so good when young!

So nice if you can harvest your own greens. I bet it's gonna be a lot of healthy soups, salads and green drinks. Enjoy.
