The lake house - Part 2

Chris met her at her house just after eight the next morning. After she got home last night she opened a bottle of wine and started to put some ideas on paper for the lake house. She wanted to open up the kitchen, add some new sliding doors and she had a brilliant plan for the deck outside.  

She went to bed late after she got lost in her planning and when Chris rang the doorbell she had barely woken up. She was still in her pajamas when he arrived and he laughed when he saw her. 

"Midnight planning again I assume?" 

She pulled a face and told him to grab some coffee while she showered. They had become very close in the last six years and acted more like brother and sister than friends. She showered quickly and tied her hair into a ponytail. She looked more like a eighteen year old than her thirty five years and Chris smiled when he saw her. 

"Looks like too much wine and an overactive imagination caught up with you last night?"

"Oh Chris stop it. Once you see the house you will feel exactly the way I feel." 

She showed him a few ideas and after they finished their coffee, they drove off to the lake house. She couldn't stop talking about the house and Chris could see that this was one special house. He had never seen her this excited about any other house before. 

The house appeared at the end of the road and Chris immediately knew why the house seemed so special. He parked next to the house and they walked down to the lake first.  The view was absolutely breathtaking. 

The house was somewhat of a disaster. They walked in at the front door and the foul smell hit them right in their faces.  

"Don't worry, I'll open some windows." Kathy said and laughed out loud when she saw Chris's face. 

"Something died in here!" Chris said while pinching his nose while he helped her to open some windows. 

"It must be a possum or a racoon or something...we'll find it when we start renovating." 

The smell subsided a little, and Kathy took Chris through the house. He took notes all the way and shuddered when he saw the kitchen. According to him it was horrendous, and they needed to build a whole new kitchen.  He was with her about the deck and could visualize what she explained to him.They spent half the day discussing their plans and just before one they drove back to the city.  

Chris was now just as excited as she was and invited her for lunch at their favorite restaurant.  They were both ravishing and they each ordered a steak for lunch.  

They discussed their plans and it was just after five when he dropped her off at her place.  He was going to get quotations together and gather his crew the next morning so that they could start. Demolishing was the biggest headache and the sooner they did that the sooner they could get an estimate on how long it would take. 

Kathy spent the evening perusing the internet for more ideas and went to bed early.  She was absolutely exhausted after the long day. She planned to meet the crew the next morning to make sure that everything went according to plan.  

The crew showed up at seven and Chris drove them out to the lake house. They started in the kitchen and broke everything out. Chris visualized an open kitchen and decided to knock down the wall on the right side so that the house could be more open plan. 

He explained to the crew what he wanted, and then his phone rang. He walked outside to take the call to get away from the noise.  He was still busy on the phone when one of the crew came running outside. 

"You have to come quickly boss." the worker said and Chris told the contractor he would phone him back.  He walked inside with the worker and then he saw it.  This was definitely where the foul smell came from and that didn't look like a possum or a racoon.  He stared at the wall in awe. Inside the wall was a body and it seemed like it had been there for a few years.  

He told the workers to drop their tools and wait outside. He phoned Kathy and told her to get her butt over there, and then dialed emergency services to come immediately.  

Kathy was stunned at the sight and knew that this was going to put a hold on everything for a while. The police had to take on this investigation now and before they finished there was absolutely nothing they could do here. 

She felt like crying and Chris comforted her. They sent the crew home, and waited for the police to arrive.  They closed the scene off, and both Chris and Kathy watched as they removed the remains of the body.  Kathy's dreams tumbled to the ground as they watched the coroner driving away with the body.  The police took their statements and promised to work as quickly as possible to finish their investigation. Both Kathy and Chris knew that this could take months to get resolved and they stared at each other in disbelief. 

This was going to be an experience they have never gone through, and they both felt devastated that their plans didn't work out as planned.  

Kathy invited Chris to lunch and instead of the excitement from the previous day they both felt depressed and devastated. This body in the wall, was putting a big damper on their plans and Chris knew that it was going to be extremely difficult to sell the house if anyone had to find out about this.  

Whoever the poor victim was, nobody knew, but the poor man was creating chaos.
