The second honeymoon - Short story

For the third morning in a row, Peter woke up with a startle. He checked his phone and saw that it was only three in the morning. Peter got up to use the bathroom, and then went straight back to bed. Just like the other three mornings he had an extremely hard time to fall asleep again.

Do these early waking sessions mean that his internal clock is warning him off something about to happen in his life? He rolled around and thought about his life. He was nearly 48 years old, and it felt as if he had done nothing with his life.

Sure, he had a great job, he was married and he had a daughter, but was that enough to show for a lifetime of work? He didn't want to wake up one morning and find that his whole life had past him by, and he did not enjoy it.

He turned on his side and stared at his beautiful wife Sylvia. Her long brown hair was sprawled out over the pillow, and he could see the grey glistening in the moonlight shining through the window. He loved her since middle school, and they were barely twenty one when they got married. Everyone warned them that it was too early and that they still had a lifetime in front of them, but they felt they were ready. Jessie was born a year later and she completed their lives. They wanted more, but it never happened.

Jessie was now married too. Also at the age of twenty one, but they had no objection. If you know it's the right person, then you know.

Peter felt happy with what he achieved, but it felt like there was something missing. Sylvia always wanted to travel, and perhaps now it was his time to give her that dream. Peter took out his phone and started searching for traveling packages. Sylvia has turned on her side by then so the light wasn't bothering her.

She had always talked about going back to Venice where they had their honeymoon, so perhaps it was time. Peter sat up and tiptoed out of the bedroom to his study. He opened the laptop and searched the net. He found the perfect package and it fit right into his budget. They had a savings account set up, and what is the use of the money just laying there? He had some upcoming leave, and booked the tickets online.

He printed out the information in his study and put it in an envelope. It was going to be the second honeymoon they always wanted.

Sylvia woke up a while later when Peter already left for work. She smiled when she saw the envelope.  He had finally remembered their wedding anniversary without her reminding him. She looked at the tickets and worked out the dates. She would be safe.

When she went to the doctor last week she did not expect the news she received. She thought that she was starting her menopause, but the doctor confirmed the pregnancy. The initial shock was overwhelming, but after a few days, she started to make peace with it.

She wanted to tell Peter this morning but he was gone too early. Perhaps she would cook him a nice dinner, so they could celebrate their surprises.....

I like the openning of story.
the story is very reasoning and I feel this is an experience, even though I know this is fiction against the background of real life stories. but you succeed in presenting in a string of sentences that will bring the reader to the story. if this continues as a serial story I think it's good. because there is another side that Peter hasn't known yet. So it will be even more interesting ... I wait for the next story

Thank you for reading as always @rokhani!

you are wellcome. You productive writer. And Steemit support your spirit well

Really nice story! I just think how sad the ending of the story is. or may be that's not the ending. She doesn't have time to tell him about her pregnancy. She can tell him by phone if she wants. hehehehehehe

A story of a monotonous couple, yet delivered in a unique and sincere way. Marriage can be very intimidating for sure, but if two people have parallel dreams which they can encourage each other to chase, then there shouldn't be a problem, well... technically speaking. I have never been married lol
