Before you sit down and play your money, either in tournaments or in cash competitions, you have to acquire the basic notions of money management.

Why is it important to have a bankroll management in poker?

The Bank's management has as its primary objective the protection of ours. In other words, it tells you what are the maximum amounts you need to invest in the cash table or tournament type.

Independent of the qualities you have, you will have a bad day at a time. Or you're going to hit the bad beat in series. Having the basic notions of bankroll management in poker, such episodes will not affect you so strongly. You will continue to keep an important amount in your bank so that you will come back in force in the near future.

In other words, you will be able to prevent "bankruptcy" at a time when nothing seems to go out as you would. Beyond the skills of the game table, anyone who will experience, in the long run, variations in the game. How many times have we gone through black periods? But with the proper management of finances, I have always kept up the line.

In addition, when you lose important hands, the phenomenon called "tilt" appears. You do not think clearly, you are wrong more often, and the only purpose you have is to turn the lost amount. Nothing wrong, you need to think clearly and make the right decisions. Bankroll management just does this: it saves you from this trap of hot decisions. If you have a proper budget management, you have all the chances of staying on the top.

How much do you invest?

It is very important to know how much you have to risk in each of the cases. Experts who we have known over 20 years ago, tell you how important it is to manage your finances correctly and they come to the following conclusion: you always have to limit yourself to the poker table at 5% of your budget. We're talking about people with highly advanced math knowledge, algorithms, and probabilities. But who do not fully understand poker, though?fast money.png

Their advice is correct and unquestionably followed. But later, other "gurus" in the field - this time with a plenary understanding of the game - looked at the issue of bankroll management very carefully. It is now considered that the right strategy takes into consideration the aspects below:

At cash tables - you have to go to the table with an amount that covers 20 times the budget. In other words, if you want to play at a table where the blinds are $ 0.1 / $ 0.2 and the maximum buy-in is $ 20, you need to have $ 400 in your account to evolve to this level. Otherwise, if the amount in your account is lower, the risks are too high and you need to change the level. Just so you can stay in the comfort zone. You should always keep in mind that you do not have to enter a cash table with a sum greater than 20th of the total budget.

In tournaments - when compared to cash tables, the situation is changing. Experts estimate that it would be ideal to take part in competitions where, with the total amount in your account, you can afford at least 100 buy-ins. So if you want to compete, for example, with a $ 10 + $ 1 SnG, then you need to have at least $ 1100 in the bank.

Without proper financial management, even if your skills can be very good, it's not enough. In the long run, you will end up losing almost all the money in your account. Strict adherence to a bankroll management in poker is all the more important in the online environment. There, the hands follow successively, and the gain mirage is higher.

20 buy-ins for cash games and 40 buy-ins for tournaments is still
a little bit of a gamble, not bankroll management. Online I would say you need at least 100 buy-ins for cash games. You probably need more than what I said, depending on the stakes you are playing and your level of game play. Of course if you are crushing the limits you can play with 50 buy-ins also, but you have to be absolutely sure you crush the limits.

When it comes to MTT's you need a lot of buy-ins to be safe. MTT's are huge variance and even if you are a top player, you can still end up loosing sometimes around 300-500 buy-ins, so be careful. That's why most MTT players use backers (investors in players which they split the profit with) to be in the safe zone.

As for SNG's, depending on the limits, it's the same thing almost as in the cash games, it depends on the limits that you are playing. SNG's are more softer than cash games tough most of the times.
