Countryside Lifestyle Photography: Making strings from bamboo, ทำเชือกผูกของจากไม้ไผ่

This is my entry for #thaiphotocontest35 on countryside lifestyle photography. This post shows how bamboo can be very useful and versatile. Villagers would make their own short strings for tying poles to their tomato plants or tying small parcels of banana leafs.

The freshly cut bamboo pole has to be divided into shorter length, we use the new saw this time as the smaller hand-saw has been borrowed by a friend. This proves to be quite tricky as it takes time to get used to the new tool. Then a sharp machete or heavy knife can be used to cut the bamboo into two halves which is further divided into smaller bamboo sticks.

This process is repeated several times until the bamboo sticks become very thin so that they seems more like harden strings.

These thin bamboo sticks are incredibly strong and flexible. Gardeners here could save a lot of money by using these bamboo strings to tie their young plants to the bamboo poles to prevent damage from strong wind.

The whole process takes about an hour as it is much easier to cut the bamboo into smaller pieces as one is working along the length of the bamboo. These thin pieces of flat bamboo strings have to be dried in the sun for about two days so they could be kept longer. Before using the bamboo strings (which is called ‘Tok’ in local dialect), they need to be soaked in water for fifteen seconds so that they become soft like cotton string. Then we could use these wet strings to tie food packages and plants in our garden.

ต้นไผ่เป็นต้นไม้ที่อัศจรรย์ เพราะมีประโยชน์มากมาย เอามาสร้างบ้าน ทำโต๊ะเก้าอี้ ทำแคร่ไว้นั่งเล่น เอามาหุงข้าวและทำข้าวหลาม ทำเป็นกระบอกน้ำ แลพอที่ใส่นํ้าอีกด้วย ที่บ้านเรา ชาวบ้านเอามาทำเชือก หรือ ที่เขาเรียกว่า ตอก เป็นเขือกที่ใข้มัดต้นไม้ เช่น ต้มมะเขือเทศ กับหลักไม้ไผ่เพื่อไม่ให้ต้นไม้ล้มเวลามีลมพัดแรง

เขาไปเลือกบ้องไผ่มาจากในป่าไผ่ แล้วใช้เลื่อยตัดเป็นท่อนๆ ตามขนาดความยาวที่ต้องการ ประมาณหนึ่งฟุต ต่อจากนั่นก็ใช้พล้าด้ามใหญ่ ผ่าไผ่ออกเป็นสองซีก มีนี้ก็ค่อยๆผ่าให้เป็นชิ้นเล็กลงเรื่อยๆ จนกว่าจะได้ชิ้นบางๆ จำนวนมาก ดูคล้ายเส้นก๋วยเตี๋ยวเส้นเล็กก่อนลวกน้ำ ตอกเหล่านี้ต้องถูกนำไปตากแดดสักสองวัน ให้มันแห้งสนิท เชื้อราจะได้ไม่ขึ้น พอเวลาจะใช้ก็เอาเส้นตอกไปแช่น้ำสักสิบห้าวินาที ตอกก็จะนิ่มเหมือนเชือกนั่นเอง เชือกที่ผูกข้าวต้มมัด และหมูยอก็คือเส้นตอกนั่นเอง ไม้ไผ่มีคุณค่าต่อชีวิตแบบชาวบ้านมาก พอๆกับต้นกล้วยเลยทีเดียว
